Where do you buy your fabulous clothes?

I’m just after looking through Zara’s ‘new in’ and I don’t think I’ve ever seen such dull, uninspiring clothes!

Zara, Mango, H&M, etc have been my go to shops for years but I feel I’m beginning to outgrow them. I want to start taking risks and having more fun with fashion - sort of Carrie Bradshaw-esque - but I’m not sure where to start. I follow India De Baufort who’s gorgeous and while I love a lot of her outfits, most of them are ££££ and some feel a teeny bit try hard.

What are you go to shops and brands for clothes that make you look and feel fabulous?

I am having a ball on Vinted if I see something that someone is wearing I always look on Vinted first and it's so cheap I can put together outfits without risk

I love the slightly 70s vibe of Rixo @SprinkleOfSunak. Sezane for me is a bit safe clothing wise @handsdownthebest but their shoes and boots are gorgeous.

Agree with others that shopping in mainland Europe is so much better. I’ve no immediate plans for a city break but the next time I’m in Edinburgh or the west end of Glasgow I’ll have a good rummage in the charity and vintage shops.

Ooh I love SJP @unlikelywitch - I would wear that whole outfit!

unlikelywitch · 29/01/2025 13:28

She’s fabulous @Purplecatshopaholic! One of very few people who just has ‘it’.

I'm a cleaner so live in joggers and old jean's but do like to have a few quality pieces for days out. I bought three linen dresses, half price from Poetry last year.
They're gorgeous in lovely colours, one a soft duck egg colour, one a pale brown and the other a soft black.
I have a very old Joules summer dress in navy stripes and a couple of Tk MX linen finds.
I always save things for best but best doesn't happen a lot so will try and get lots of wear out of them this year.

unlikelywitch · 29/01/2025 14:18

Exactly this @Inlimboin50s. I’m like you in that dressing up for work isn’t really an option but saving things for best just seems a bit of a waste. Life’s too short.

Me too. I actually wear a uniform for work and my social life consists of walking the dogs and shopping at Sainsburys!
Doesnt mean I cant do it all in fabulous fun patterned dresses or swishy colourful maxi skirts though.

(I bought a pair of trousers similar to SJPs there this year from Vinted, but mine are a more loud deckchair stripe. Looking forward to getting them out this summer).
As for where I buy clothes I def favour more retro places with abit of colour (for me the classy beige/neutral look feels just a little bit sad and boring).
Some shops surprise you though....Im a big fan of Disturbia which is more alt/Goth. The knitwear is beautiful and the trousers well tailored so I became a fan even though I wouldnt say Im much of a Goth!

@unlikelywitch I too love Vivienne Westwood, not the Melissa shoes and brighter clothes. Old (10 years +) all saints, Bolongaro Trevor and Karen millen did some copies- not quite the same quality but a whiff of the aesthetic.

Lots have been mentioned but this might be useful:

colour and fun; & other stories, ganni, Stine Goya, Olivia Rubin, Baum and pferdarden (sp?), Rotate, LF Market, YMC. Some of theses are a bit slinky, ruched, shiny - pick and choose. JL stocks a few mid range brands (sister Jane, cape cove, etc) and good sales

All of above on vinted and eBay. I often filter on multicoloured and pinks/oranges against my favourite brands. Cos used to do a neon contrast colour in each season, against the mainly neutrals. They still do so if you like bright block colour…

independent boutiques online- loads of random ones but often do decent sales and have helpful owners who will chat over the phone

Sample sales and the OUTNET for inspiration/ random thoughts. Tkmaxx stock some of the brands above, plus Rixo - patience required.

Lurkingshark · 29/01/2025 19:41

Forgot to add Bimba y Lola. Lots on vinted

soupyspoon · 29/01/2025 19:42

Charity shops and Spain and Italy
I must remember to go with empty suitcases

Mrburnshound · 29/01/2025 19:46

I also went to zara today and it was decidedly meh. I also prefer to shop in person but the highstreet is so rubbish.

RobinEllacotStrike · 03/03/2025 12:41

Wolf & Badger and Klements - new to me via S&B thankyouverymuch.

I also have some super cool & unique dresses I have made myself.

madaboutpurple · 03/03/2025 12:53

I went to Berlin some years ago and spent hours in C&A as they have a big shop in the middle of the city. I got quite a few things at the time. I tend to use Vinted and charity shops mainly.

warningairbag · 03/03/2025 13:14

Massimo Dutti, Toast (jumpers and T shirts), Brora (linen trousers and cord trousers), Cos. I bought gorgeous cord trousers from White Stuff last month in their sale.

AngryLikeHades · 03/03/2025 13:31

I use Vinted as a buying platform and I often buy very good quality clothing from 10 or so years ago when the quality was better.
I also buy clothes from there that are more expensive such as Gant and Liberty and gorgeous cashmere that i wouldn't be able to afford, especially in the quantity that I have.
I buy more highstreet brands also, often multiples of ones I already have because I know they fit well and that I like the quality. I have an amazing New Look jumpsuit that I bought from Vinted, it is a multiple of one I initially bought new. It was less than £10 where I paid £46 for the item originally.
Jack Wills items from approx 15 years ago is of fabulous quality and back then, as a student I couldn't afford as much of their items as I wished, so I buy very good condition pieces from back then from Vinted. The workmanship and cut of their summer dresses that fit as if they were handmade and hard wearing, thick material looks expensive.
