Best face moisturiser for really dry skin?

My go-to moisturisers are usually hyaluronic acid followed by Clinique Moisture Surge but it just doesn't seem to be doing the job anymore - my skin is so dry and tight feeling, especially in this cold weather. My skin is eczema prone too.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a facial moisturiser that doesn't leave white residue (preferably a gel texture), is suitable for sensitive skin and makes your skin feel hydrated for more than 5 minutes?

In winter I also find it can be hard to get the right level of moisture.

What are you using at night? I've been using a face oil after the rest of my routine and it does seem to also make my skin less dry and dehydrated for when I put moisteriser on in the morning. I also find some vitamin C serums are more moisterising than others - Im' using the last of my Ordinary Vitamin C in Silicon (they've discontinued) as it really helps my skin feel less dry.

Also, do you wash your face in the morning? I never do, or at best, use a very gentle hydrating cleanser in the shower.

My favourite super moisterising brands on the cheaper end are Elf and Neutrogena. Neutrogena's Hydro range does a couple of gel like ones you could try.

At this time of year, money permitting, i sometimes swap to the Clarins moisteriser - the red or dark pink one work for me (peri menopause, almost 50). I dont' like it the rest of the year, but it's nice when my skin is really dry and flakey.

I also like the Clarins Double Serum as a nice moisterising all rounder under my moisteriser.

Oh, and I don't use this as don't need it but you could look for a serum with zinc or niacamides to protect the skin barrier. DS has one from The Ordinary which works quite well to lock in moisture.

My skin is very similar to yours and I was prescribed Eucerin moisturiser which you can buy at boots as well as any pharmacy.
It works instantly and doesn't cause any flare ups.

Agree with PP, face oil is the only thing that keeps me hydrated in winter, and all year really!
I use a couple of drops of Poppy Austin organic rosehip seed, let it sink in a bit then apply a either a couple more drops or a lighter moisturiser over the top.
Clarins face oils are magic at night - also smell gorgeous.

I've had various samples of the clarins ones over the years and never rewally got it.

NOW I do!!! I honestly wake up all glowy. It's quite annoying as I might actually have to buy one when my current little mini sample runs out. How many have i just lost or tossed away over the years?!

Moisture surge Clinique is like water - doesn't do anything

Try corsx snail muercin
Vaseline
Clarins day cream and facial oils are good

Weleda Skin Food is brilliant for dry skin.

BeCalmNavyDreamer · 28/01/2025 14:11

Body Shop Vitamin E moisturiser and bi phase serum. Super drug Vitamin E good too and cheaper.

PlumpAndDeliciousFatcat · 28/01/2025 14:14

Your current products aren't working for you because they are designed to be hydrating (ie to draw in water) whereas if your skin is dry then it is lacking in oil. Gel formulations tend to be best for oily skins and I don't know of any that are suitable for very dry skin, although if you're really wedded to the formula you could add a separate oil. If you want to stay with Clinique you could try the Dramatically Different + moisturiser.

I did the same! And now I'm addicted to the l'huile lotus etc.
Always used to buy their cleanser, toner and eau dynamisante and get loads of samples that I'd just bin!
I love the smell of them as I drift off to sleep. Helps me imagine I'm somewhere relaxing, not at home! 😁

PitifulPrincess · 28/01/2025 20:26

Thank you for all the suggestions so far! I'd never considered a facial oil at night, I'll definitely look into that

I started taking collagen tablet supplements a few weeks ago and I recently started feeling that my skin doesn't need the intense serums and moisturisers it had needed. The last two days I've only cleaned with a balm cleaner as usual, and then used the blue pump nivea, and it feels moisturised and comfortable.

Can you use the collagen tablets for long term?

Girlintheframe · 03/11/2025 10:14

I have dry skin and the best thing I’ve found is to layer products. I’m using by Byoma skin barrier serum then Elemis pro collagen oil then weleda skin food. I find this works much better than one thick cream.

@UmberMoose , I'm not a medic but my lay person understanding is that it's not researched enough yet for guidance.
