Jewellery remodelling ideas

I am feeling conflicted, do I guess looking for thoughts as well as ideas...!

My engagement ring is lovely, white gold sort of braided/twisted with sapphires in the links. The problem is, they are set with "claw" style settings and they catch on literally everything. They always did, but i was hardly going to complain/change ut whilst engaged i guess!

We're now married and I just don't wear my engagement ring. It doesn't massively bother me emotionally, as I guess in my head now I'm married it makes sense I wear my wedding ring and not my engagement ring, but it does seem a shame I have this lovely looking ring with so many fond memories that I simply will never wear again.

So I've been pondering getting it remodelled into something I would actually wear... I am conflicted, do I really want to change "the" ring DH proposed with? I'm not decided... but I would like to see what the options might be and I've no idea how to go about it.

Has anyone done anything similar and have any advice?

Sounds like the claws just need to be redone. Could you post a picture of the ring?

I'm away from home at the moment, but this very similar. Do you think it would be possible to make the claws less "catchy"? That would be perfect!

I had mine turned into a necklace - took it back to the jeweller who had made the ring and we worked out a nice design together. My initial thought was a pendant and some stud earrings but they convinced me to drop the earrings and just keep the pendant.

Yes, I'm not a jeweller but I've had jewellery repairs done many a time!

That's a lovely ring style, if you still like it I wouldn't remake it.

Just take it into somewhere to get it looked at. The prongs may just need to be tweaked (remade, hammered down, cut down - whatever it needs) and it'll likely be cheap as chips.

Avoid high street branded jewellery shops where send things off, and look for a little local place who do the work on the premises. Or any bespoke jeweller in your are will likely be able to look at it and give you a price!

It depends on your lifestyle and if you’re likely to wear it eg healthcare, child care etc. I had my ring reset with a different central stone as it was bought online during covid and just wasn’t right - I absolutely adore it now and have the original stone on a necklace, my husband is happy I have the ring I want

I just struggle to know where to take it. I realise an independent is likely to be better potentially, but I have no idea who's good... and I'm worried about it getting destroyed completely! Argh

Some good thought though about seeing if the claws could be adjusted... it wasn't hugely expensive so possibly not the most professional construction, but obvious sentimental value!

I would see about having the claws adjusted, you can get point claws and tab claws and most probably lots more! My ring has tiny tab claws and it's not a fluff magnet.
I would have a look at the jewellers social media to get a look of what they do.
If you were in the Channel Islands, I could recommend a jeweller!

I've just had a ring remodelled for just the same reason - claws catching on things, and the setting was too high. I had the setting changed to a lower rub over setting. I'm delighted with the result

EnterFunnyNameHere · 26/01/2025 20:00

Well it definitely sounds worth investigating! At least to get options/quotes...!

When I got engaged because of the manual work I did the time, I opted for a rub over setting as a previous ring always caught on jumpers etc and one claw broke.

It is a lovely ring and I am sure a jeweller would be able to adjust the claws.

If you're near Plymouth I can recommend someone 😂

CMOTDibbler · 26/01/2025 21:01

My engagement ring caught on things, and the jeweller was able to take the stones out, drill the setting down, and bend the prongs over more and it has been perfect since. I use someone in Cheltenham

Thanks for the suggestions, but I'm over in Cambridgeshire so these are a bit far for me 😊

I’ve used this jeweller for 2 repairs and a remodel - he’s excellent @EnterFunnyNameHere
