HOKA’s

I keep seeing people on here saying that they love HOKA’s, so what am I missing out on?
I could do with a pair of comfy, water proof (but not sweaty) trainer style shoes for dog walking. And I go to the gym a couple of times a week.

I contemplated them recently but I find them really ugly with all the loud branding. But they regularly come top of all the trainer reviews.

Sticking with my Merrells. But I also thibk Adidas Terrex are not too ugly.

I find the Clifton style really comfortable and are good for my planar facilitis. I have plain black ones and some different colours for the summer. They seem to be popular in my gym but I wear them because I can walk miles in them with no repercussions and I’m not fussed if popular or not.

I wear them for running and they are very comfortable but I wouldn’t wear them for anything else, except perhaps a v long walk. They are not a fashion trainer imo.

I don’t want them for fashion, just to be comfortable when dog walking.
My current gym trainers are ASICS and are the breathable type fabric with millions of holes, so no good for walking on wet days.
I’ve had plantar fasciitis in the past, so I’m always looking for good support as I don’t want to go there again.

I have the Hoka One One's for running, but for walking/ work etc I wear FitFlops. Switching to wearing FF trainers and boots for most of the time really seemed to help get rid of the plantar fasciitis for me.

My issue with hokas (apart from my DH always buying the loudest, brashest colours) is that the heel comes in quite high. So I can't wear my usual low socks with them, or they rub.
Mine (arahis) are black with white soles, and great for walking in although I bought them for running. But they aren't waterproof.

I wear Hoka arahi for running but I wouldn't wear them in the gym because of the rocking sole. For hiit classes or any kind of static weights I would use something light and flat soled. Plus I size up a lot for running so gym shoes need to be a different size as my feet don't swell as much.

Great question, OP. I also use ASICS but want some comfortable, waterproof trainers that won't look out of place with a normal day outfit.

I've looked at some other ASICS that are GTX:

I was recommended hoka challengers for running when I got my first proper runners at a run shop and have always liked them as they work for on and off road runs. I got a gore-tex pair in a sale a couple of years back and they are the only ones that are waterproof. All my other ones have mesh or similar and not at all waterproof.

I think the style of them (as in the profile not the colours!) depends very much on what you need. Definitely not good for gym (as a PP has said - they are a very cushioned and high soled/heeled style) but if you get gore tex ones which are trail or hybrid (with the cleated soles) I think excellent for walks.
