Help! I’ve lost my style

I’m going back to work after a seven year break with two DCs and I have no idea what suits me any more. I’m 44, size 8-10, 5’4”. Hourglass (ish).

My wardrobe for work and everyday is pretty much the same - country chic with just a touch of eccentric creative. I suit neutrals and brights.

No budget limit - I’m a Vinted/Ebay fan so if I can’t afford it new I’ll look for it on there.

What footwear is in? I’ve got used to living in knee boots and loafers.

I love dresses and skirts but also want to look good in trousers/jeans.

Help!

Key info

what kind of work and the industry?

BoudiccasBangles · 25/01/2025 17:34

I’m self-employed - so can be myself. I’m a writer/architectural historian working with old houses and country estates.

So classic but a wee bit arty and not buttoned up!

In that case wear whatever you feel comfortable with

im guessing the people you are meeting with won’t be at the cutting edge of high fashion!

so if that’s your current style
is that not appropriate?!

Well it is - was - but I’ve been in mummy chic for the last seven years - leggings and baby vomit - so I’ve forgotten what stylish looks like!

I’m soooo out of touch with things. I think I look okay then I realise I’m wearing outfits from 9 years ago and I feel really dated.

No style advice but can I be nosey and ask what your job entails? It sounds so interesting!

It’s evolved over time. It’s a bit of this and a bit of that now. I write books (fiction and non-fiction) and I do a bit of tourism writing. Most of the time
I have to pinch myself.

@Changemynameyetagain I think I’m
probably fundamentally nosey - that’s why I do what I do 😂

Palava dresses

be a 👍 or 👎 for you?

Aime London?

Cawley Studio?

Colenimo?

Or …

Cos

Margaret Howell

Studio Nicholson

Or …

Horror Vacui? (Not really everyday clothes but might suit an occasion.)

Take inspiration from Claudia's wardrobe in The Traitors? Her stylist Sinead McKeefry has loads of pictures on Instagram.

Look at Dark Academia styles - they can be as quirky or conventional as you like.

If you want comfort and to be in the background Uniqlo items look good when paired with other stuff.

@MsWintertowne that was such a helpful post. You’ve made me realise what’s not working. I can’t wear the kooky librarian look any more. Before children I was a petite size 8 with waist length hair and I’ve… changed a bit 😂 So I now know that I want (need) to be more streamlined, quieter designs, more classic, less patterns. Thank you so much!

@TheLongRider I covet Claudia’s wardrobe! Good thinking.
