What's the mumsnet verdict on whether this works for black tie?

It's floor length, but in a shimmer knit material that maybe makes it a bit comfier / less formal? It's to wear to a professional dinner in March.

Was thinking obviously nice heels, clutch.

Is this dress black tie appropriate?

I’d say it’s too casual - it’s the knit material and colour combined. It would work better in black, with a different belt.

Xmasisoverboohoo · 24/01/2025 13:17

It's a lovely dress! The only reservation I would have is the woollen material makes it seem a more casual look.

Drinkingteathroughastraw · 24/01/2025 13:18

Nowhere near formal enough for black tie I'm afraid

NovemberMorn · 24/01/2025 13:19

It's lovely, but maybe too casual.
If the sleeves were turned up so your wrists were visible, long dangly earings, and like the other poster said, a different belt, it could dressier.

Wordau · 24/01/2025 13:36

No it's the material that's too informal. The shape is ok. Colour could be too depending on material. I'd look for someone similar in satin.

ThejoyofNC · 24/01/2025 13:48

Nope, just because something is long, doesn't mean it's black tie. The colour is lovely but the material is wrong.

LadyRoughDiamond · 24/01/2025 13:51

No. Knitted clothing is not black tie appropriate.

Idontjetwashthefucker · 24/01/2025 14:11

Gorgeous dress but it's another no from me I'm afraid, too casual

This dress is something I imagine TOWIE cast wear in front of telly on a night in 🥹

henlake7 · 24/01/2025 15:59

Its very nice but more for a family or friends event rather then a black tie one.

kdramaqueen · 24/01/2025 17:10

That &other stories dress is to die for.

I also like the pink dress and belt, and would wear it to a black tie event. It gives off a fashionable, confident and individualistic vibe. While most knits aren't formal enough for a black tie event and the metallic thread in the fabric would lift it, but it all depends on how elegantly you style it.

Agree with this. I think with the right styling it could absolutely work.

SparklingSpa · 24/01/2025 18:01

Actually I think it could work with the right accessories.

NotMeNoNo · 24/01/2025 18:23

I was looking at this the other day and thinking, black tie dress for £9, is that too good to be true?
Sainsburys
edit - I've seen it in store and the fabric is lovely, not tissue thin.

HermioneWeasley · 24/01/2025 18:39

I’m going to go against the majority here and say I think it’s fine. It looks like a lurex type fabric rather than knit. The shimmer elevates it and the off the shoulder makes it more formal. With the right accessories I think it will be lovely.

Aintnobodygottime · 24/01/2025 18:48

I like it and if you feel comfortable in it that makes it more suitable too. Better not to be constantly thinking about how you think you look and pulling at material etc. Also black tie is just a guide - no one will be standing at the door policing attendees.

DoubleDoubleDown · 24/01/2025 18:53

@NotMeNoNo - have you tried that dress on? Was it flattering?. I think the (very lovely)model looks like a sack of spuds in it & her face says she thinks the same 😄

MissHollyGolightly · 24/01/2025 19:07

I would wear for a professional dinner. It's not like you want to be bare and sexy at such events. I've seen a lot more casual.

WashableVelvet · 24/01/2025 19:26

I really like it. A professional dinner suggests the other women aren’t going to be wearing tiaras or anything very revealing. And at the moment it feels more current to be dressed slightly down than too dressed up. I prefer the beige/gold.

NetZeroZealot · 24/01/2025 19:50

It’s fine for a black tie dinner.
go for it OP.
