Please can anybody recommend a very simple natural face moisturiser?

I have a very bad eye allergy to the point where my corneas were becoming damaged. The eye hospital don't know what causes it, but prescribed me eye drops and a strong antihistamine to take each day.

Because of this, I can't wear makeup or use products on my face. I can just about get away with a tiny amount of Cerave facial wash. I was using a small amount of Cerave moisturiser on my face, but my eyes are flaring up recently and I don't know why, so I've stopped using that.

I'm now washing my hair leaning back so no shampoo gets on my face. No tap water on face, only Evian water and La Roche Posay spring water spray as a sort of moisturiser. No towel or flannel on my eyes either in case it's a laundry product that's the problem.

Please can anyone recommend a super simple moisturiser? I'd prefer nothing greasy. It can't be anything commercial like the stuff in chemists because they all contain petrochemicals. I have had coconut oil before, but I'm not that keen on oils. I can't use aloe vera either.

I just need something basic to stop my face feeling dry and tight after a shower.

Almond oil is also gentle

tunainatin · 23/01/2025 21:58

Coconut oil, it is absorbed into the skin very easily so doesn't feel greasy

Firstly you need to rule out anything that has any kind of preservative in it, which all creams and lotions will have. The second you add water to oil for example you need to add the preservative to it to extend the shelf life and this is the sort of thing that will irritate your skin. The more natural creams are no exception as they have essential oils as preservatives and can also irritate. You've just received lots of great suggestions to try pure rosehip, jojoba, sesame or castor oil. You only just need a drop or two to moisturise so doesn't need to be greasy. Coconut oil is not always tolerated well by everyone can be comedogenic. Neal's yard and weleda are great brands too, but I would get a sample first if your skin is this sensitive. You could also try a face balm with minimal ingredients and fragrance. In fact I make one myself, it's very easy with just a few ingredients from Amazon like bees wax and some type of oil. Cheap as chips!

Tallow balm might be worth a try.

Hi Op, @Asvoria what about something from this range ...
https://www.nealsyardremedies.com/collections/create-your-own

They do a face and body lotion and an ointment base. From past experience the ointment is like a body butter type texture, the lotion is thinner but still moisturising.

Create Your Own

Our Create Your Own range is the perfect way to treat yourself, or to create a unique aromatherapy gift for someone special.

I have an eye condition and use this as a moisturiser. Cheap as chips and makes my skin soft. www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B009F72YUI/ref=ox_sc_saved_title_4?smid=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&psc=1

Here is a very simple recipe https://www.alphafoodie.com/homemade-all-natural-soothing-skin-balm-for-dry-skin/

and one that has more ingredients https://krissyballinger.com.au/recipes/night-time-face-balm/

Omit essential oils if your skin is ultra sensitive and remember that with balms and oils less is more :)

I've also had good luck with this company (if you don't fancy making your own) https://www.soapnuts.co.uk/products/fragrance-free-healing-soapnut-salve-60g

Asvoria · 24/01/2025 17:48

Thank you everyone, there's some great ideas there, and I've ordered a couple of things and I have glycerine in already. I'm really interested in making my own moisturiser as well.

But it is comedogenic, so don’t use too much!
