Has anyone grown out their dyed hair

and if so are you happy you did it or does it look better dyed? I'm 37 and have been dying my hair since I was 16 and I'm over it tbh. I would like to attempt to grow it out but my hair is dyed very dark and naturally I'm much lighter so will be a very tough journey.

Are you very grey op? Or is it just that your natural hair is lighter than the dye?

Beamur · 21/01/2025 10:38

I had my hair coloured in a way that has let me grow it out without having an obvious regrowth line.

@ImNotThereAmI nope no greys yet just my natural colour

@Beamur I've heard people do that but as I'm so dark I think it will take lots of trips to the salon to try and get it lighter and I don't want to risk stripping it

If the roots are lighter it should look fine whilst growing out

I grew mine out,had it hilighted as I went along to soften the root situation, you could have a lighter colour than the dark. In the end I’m back to dying it again,as I think it aged me being grey/ white . I’m back to me again😁

I’m growing out mine atm !! (7months no colour ) Because I had a reverse balayage over full head blonde it’s not to bad to be honest u will be tempted to sabotage yourself but I give myself a good talking too and it stops me in my tracks this year is all about healthy hair that’s the trend I have seen so many people growing out there bleach or hair dye !!! You won’t be alone ! Mines mousy brown !

ThisGoldTraybake · 21/01/2025 15:15

Yep, happier with it. Although I don’t have any greys yet.

I grew mine out. It was dyed a dark chestnut colour and it's now my natural salt & pepper but still mostly light/medium ash brown. Greys are evenly distributed like highlights. It is much healthier but I do miss the warmth as my natural brown hair is very ash brown with no warmth or red tones at all. Therefore I am contemplating using a semi permanent colour just to add some warmth to my natural brown. I'm not even bothered about the grey, it's purely the fact that the ash and lack of warmth looks a little draining on me.

I'd speak to a stylist- if your hair condition is good they could lighten it, then apply a colour/toner that will help your natural hair blend in better (e.g. if you're currently dark brown, with blonde hair, apply a medium brown to help the transition be less stark, and add highlights).

I'm growing my bleach out, been having highlights full head first then half head, for over 30 years, I'm now 64, stop since lockdown, I do put a few in along top parting and fringe myself, I did this inbetween salon visits anyway, my hair is dark mousey, but in different lights I see a slight red auburn colour, my mums was dark auburn, I was a blonde child till arou d 10 then went dark mousey. I have a few greys was hoping I'd go white like my older sister but it hasn't happened yet.

I’ve a sensitive scalp so couldn’t dye my hair when I wanted and so had to grow out the colour. This was 2014, no regrets. It did take two years.

No mine looks terrible - like invisible - makes me look balding.

Highlights/ low lights are good for blending the roots and don't look bad as they grow.
