trouser zip at the back???

Noticed that in Rogue Heroes the character Eve Mansour's trousers had the zip at the back. I have vintage sewing patterns for trousers with back zips. Back in the day ladies trouser zips were at the side. Do you remember any other clothing oddities? Here are some to start you off. Stockings with seams. Stiletto heeled shoes - only athletes wore trainers. 'Smart' coats- only hikers wore anoraks. Powder compacts. Negligees. (sorry, my computer doesn't do oblique accents!). No teenage fashion; girls went at about aged fourteen from puff sleeves and pigtails to dressing like their mothers!

In the Eighties "high" heels were about 2 inches max. Whenever a TV series is set in the 80s now, they always show modern spindly heels well over 3 or 4 inches in height, sometimes with a platform (just no in the 80s, they were too close to the 70s).

How old are you, @billycat321?

It’s extremely hilarious to see perfectly ordinary items that I grew up with, wore and used or continue to use listed as oddities.

I saw some excellent trousers with the zip at the back on, I think, the Net-a-Porter site yesterday. Side zips are commonplace.

I’m pretty sure I’ve bought stockings with seams this century - can’t remember why. I wore them quite often in the 80s.

Stilettos … Weirdly I don’t think I have any at the moment but they’ve been part of my life as an adult for about forty years. They’re not currently the height of fashion but I dare say I’ll buy some more at some point. Plenty of women wear them, regardless.

Do you genuinely not own a ‘smart’ - as in tailored, non-synthetic coat? You’re missing out.

Pretty sure about a billion women own a powder compact currently. Probably more.

The one thing I’ve never owned is a negligee. There’s still time …

As for No teenage fashion - how far back are you thinking? It definitely wasn’t the case from the 1960s onwards in England. I was a teen in the 70s - locally teen fashion centred on Chelsea Girl, but if you went to London there were limitless options. For teenagers and their mothers.

In the 1970s ? Of course there was teenage fashion. Chelsea Girl, Bus Stop, Etam.

Stiletto heeled shoes - only athletes wore trainers.
I don't understand this one. Stiletto heels have always been and are always around. They're a bit unpopular now but even that's relatively recent.

Smart' coats- only hikers wore anoraks.

I don't understand this one either. A smart coat isn't an oddity.

I lived in the back of beyond and there was teenage fashion.

I had shoes with 3 or 4 inch heels in the 80’s but they were very much “going out” shoes.

My favourite trouser pattern has the zip at the back. Not vintage.

Given every brand from Rimmell upwards sells them someone must buy them. I do.

Although have never owned a negligé

StarlightLady · 20/01/2025 13:47

I still have a number of pairs of stockings with seams. I picked up about 9 pairs with a cuban heal in sealed packets from a charity shop, and the right size; they come in shoe sizes.

I agree with the hilarity of all this! Very normal items.

I wore trainers as everyday day casual shoes back in the 1980s - Converse boots in various colours. I'm mid 50s, I've never owned stilletos.

Back/side zips in women's trousers seem to be more common in tailored /couture items than in high street clothes. Although some of the best trousers I ever had had a side zip - from Asda in the mid 90s.

GreatAunt26 · 20/01/2025 14:01

I might be interested in trousers with zips at the back.
I find it really difficult (and usually do not buy or return, if I didn't notice in the description) to have a side zip.

IHaveAlwaysLivedintheCastle · 20/01/2025 14:03

Anoraks were normal wear in the 60s. I wanted one at Primary school because my friends had them and I had a duffel coat.

By my teens I wouldn't have been seen dead in an anorak and loved my duffel coat. Still feel the same re anoraks v duffel coats.

Bailiwitch · 20/01/2025 14:22

I can actually recall our anoraks arriving, sometime in the late 60s! My mother had ordered them from a catalogue - can’t remember which one. I think mine was blue and my sibling’s was red.

It's really odd!

I'm 40 and I either own or have owned all of these! 😂
