I have one pair of trousers. Do I need to buy more clothes?

Towards the end of my pregnancy, my maternity wardrobe depleted and I didn't bother buying more because we're skint and I was nearly at due date anyway. I hated my maternity wardrobe - mostly a bundle of stuff that a kind freecycler gave me and none of it suited me.

So, I had my baby 8 days ago and I still can't do any of my regular clothes up. I'm okay for tops, but I only have one pair of trousers I can wear. No skirts, no dresses. (I'm not counting dp's jogging pants or my pyjama trousers). AND the wearable trousers are a bit horrid really.

I don't even fit into my fat clothes!
And I didn't put on that much weight - really, I've been bigger, it's just this big ole post baby belly that's the problem.

So...

Is my uterus still shrinking and will I be in normal clothes again by next week?

Or, is this how it is with baby number two and I need to get some stretchy waistbands and bigger clothes for the next few months while I work on my belly?

Oh, and, if I need to buy something, what should I get? Something drapey? What's flattering? The man in M&S offered to carry my shopping to the car yesterday so I obviously still look pregnant.

I'm still don't fit my clothes but I put on loads of weight. I've got some new things that do fit. I shopped online as find it hard to have the time to go round shops. I've got some skirts and longer tops. Check out ebay for some bargains.

go to peacocks or primark get a couple of skirts. at 8 days i was still in maternity stuff. i was well fat though.

cupsoftea · 06/05/2008 14:01

I still wear my maternity tops - got them from h&m & blooming mavellous - great for bf out & about and they don't look like preg tops (I hope!!)

Psychomum5 · 06/05/2008 14:01

how long were you before you could fit 'normal' clothes after your first baby??

I left hospital first time back to normal (I was in a week tho!), and second time took me two weeks, so twice as long.

if you are nearly there, then either go to primark and get two pairs of cheap trousers to keep going, or bite the bullet and wear the 'horrid' stuff for a couple more weeks and then go shopping for one new pair to add to the stuff that now fits you again

at 8 days I was still in matwear too - took 4-6wks to get back into my early-pg clothes

actually all of which are currently sitting unworn in my wardrobe - if you are a 12 who suits muddy sludgy muted neutral tones you can have the lot

We were near some shops today and DP suggested we pop in and I could buy something to wear. Big treat. I never buy clothes for myself from proper shops. Went into Gap, DPs and Next.

Oh the trauma.

As if shopping for clothes isn't hard enough at the best of times. Shopping for clothes when I have an OFFENSIVELY ENORMOUS JELLY BELLY is not for the faint hearted.

Oh god.

Oh sweetheart, give yourself a break - it's 9 DAYS since your offensive belly was the perfectly lovely home of your baby! It will go away, but I would def say get something v. cheap indeed in the interim as your one pair of trousers will shortly be covered in wee/puke/shit/unidentifiable stickiness so you'll need something else to wear. I'd get a skirt rather than trousers, and all tops are like mat clothes at the moment anyway so you should easily get something that skims over the lump. If you have any mates who've had babies, ask them for their 'interim' clothes then you can hate them without having to pay for them, iyswim.

Fingerbobs · 06/05/2008 20:41

Doh, just realised that this is no2 so you know all this anyway. Sorry!

BroccoliSpears · 08/05/2008 12:11

Oh no, don't be sorry. It's ALWAYS lovely to hear nice positive reassuring things.
