I dyed a lovely cashmere jumper from the charity shop. It was lilac and I tried to dye it black as I read that cashmere will take dye. It has come out a very unflattering (on me) brown, like chestnut really. I don’t think I’m going to get it black but if I try navy next time do you think that might work? I don’t suit warm colours so need it black, navy or grey really. Somehow I think that navy might counteract the brown. Any thoughts?

There’s a Facebook group called ‘Dye your clothes - make them your season’ full of experts.

I would have thought that would have worked, unless there are some other (synthetic) fibres mixed in with the cashmere.
It's important to wash the garment first.

For what you've got now, you could use a colour remover and try again, or try and overdye the brown, but to be honest, you‘ll probably end up with a brownish black colour by the sound of it.

That’s unusual as lilac is pale. I’ve dyed beige cashmeres to green with success. I left it longer than suggested though . I used a cold salt water dye in a bucket.

I wonder if the dye wasn’t on long enough. I did it in the machine on a wool/handwash cycle which is quite short. It is 100% cashmere so I thought it would have worked but it’s not even very dark brown 🤷‍♀️

I would have another go with a hand dye in a bucket.

I think I might, thanks
