I have very fine hair which is getting thinner and weaker as i get older. I hate it. What can i do to make it thicker and stronger? I just use generic shampoo because i don't know what else to get. I can't afford anything too expensive. Please help!

Is yours breaking or is it thinning, or both?
I have fine hair it's getting weak and is breaking. I'm usually olaplex and I'm going to start taking vitamins- maybe some collagen too.
Following with keen interest as I'm getting fed up too.

Same here. I have found an improvement with Plantur shampoo and tonic and an Aveda thickening spray before styling. I also take liquid collagen every day. I've just bought the champo serum but not tried it yet. Be interested to know if anyone else has tried it.

I've tried Champo but it made no difference, sadly.

I'm so fed with having the thinnest hair of any room I'm in. Except if there are some 80/90 year old women, mine is always the thinnest by far.

I know there are worse problems but it really gets me down. I hate it when anyone is behind me because my crown is so thin.

I'm trying rosemary oil mixed with sweet almond oil at the moment, as that's supposed to be as effective as minoxidil.

Not a treatment - but I find that Osis dust sprinkled through the roots after washing and drying gives a bit of grit/ oomph to hair and disguises the thinning slightly.

rainbowstardrops · 18/01/2025 10:18

I know exactly what you mean! Fine hair runs in my family and my DS who is mid 20's, has very fine hair too and is conscious of it.
I've previously bought some coloured strands from Amazon (can't remember the name) that you can sprinkle in your hair. It disguises your scalp a bit. Might be worth a try?

Autther · 18/01/2025 10:21

Have a look into using rosemary oil. You can make it yourself and I use application bottles I bought off amazon

TiramisuThief · 18/01/2025 10:24

I take collagen for my joints and it's had a noticeable effect on my hair and nails.

I don't have thin hair though but I don't see a downside to giving it a go. It's been about two months since I started and I've really noticed it this last couple of weeks.

You want marine collagen, and the stuff you spoon into your tea/ coffee is better than capsules.

I’ve tried everything to help my hair. It’s slightly better but it’s not back to we’re it was pre menopause. What I’ve found works is a caffeine shampoo and conditioner. This slows the shedding cycle so I hang onto the hair for longer.
A thickening product after washing - I use a Neal and Wolf one which is brilliant. Lightweight and lasts for ages as you only need a tiny bit.
For breakages I take a daily multi vitamin with iron and biotin. Me hair seems to be better when I eat I higher protein diet and I never go any where without a satin pillow case. i have a collection now from when I find myself on a weekend away and find I’ve forgotten mine and buy another one. Honestly can’t sleep on cotton anymore. If I do I wake in the morning and find all the hairs that have come out in the night. Cotton is just too rough when hair is fragile,

RandomMess · 18/01/2025 10:29

@MioDioMio start keeping a spare satin case in each suitcase/weekend travel bag. Harder to forget that way.

My hairdresser rates the Opalex dupes in Aldi for anyone that's found Opalex works for their hair issues.

RedLightsStopSigns · 18/01/2025 10:31

Have you been to the GP? Could be that you have a deficiency or other condition that is causing this.

MioDioMio · 18/01/2025 10:31

@RandomMess thank you that’s a great idea. Going to do it NOW!

eastsheener · 18/01/2025 10:53

My hair was falling out in big amounts, turns out I was low in iron after a blood test and after taking ferritin it seems to be growing back.

WrinklesShminkles · 18/01/2025 12:42

The evidence for rosemary helping is questionable. I get all day root lift from rinsing my hair while bending forward in the shower. Doesn't stop the thinning but makes it less obvious.

lakesandplains · 18/01/2025 12:53

I take collagen, I get Vida glow but I've also had chuckling goat and think it does help - has benefits beyond hair.

Newpillowtalk · 18/01/2025 15:21

I’m exactly the same crown was getting bigger, parting was getting wider.
I’ve researched and tried everything!
Rosemary oil, caffeine shampoo, vitamins, I take collage in my morning coffee, LED hairbrush. I’m also very careful with how I treat my hair/scalp - sulphate free shampoo etc.

I had put in down to being PP or weight loss - PP. I even had vitamin levels checked as it was coming out in clumps every time I washed it, I was so stressed and self conscious!
I finally booked to see a specialist hair doctor (transplant surgeon etc) He has prescribed me midoxinill. It’s working it’s amazing!!! 2 months in and I have shoots of new hair all over my head and my parting is closing up.
You can buy it at boots without prescription, I believe.
I did speak to my Doc to ask once hair has returned can I stop taking it. He said no it’s like skin care, you wouldn’t expect the same results if you stopped moisturising, so I happy to keep this in my routine now.
I think the rosemary oil study hasn’t been proven as it wasn’t like for like. Also if you are experiencing this, the sooner you act the better. You don’t want to pin your hopes on say rosemary oil and waste a few months and risk losing more hair, I did this for 2 months. I’ve never posted before but can relate so much to this post, I had to share my experience.
Also yes Osis dust is great they do a fine hair/lighter version. Sometimes I use the root cover up spray from L’Oréal, it stops the scalp being so visible.
I do recommend red light therapy brush too, (mine is from Opatra - think they do offers on QVC/similar) apparently multi pronged treatment is best for treating hair loss.

Bignanna · 18/01/2025 16:39

The trouble is you have to use midoxinil for life -that’s very expensive!
