Would it be really crazy to shave off my hair ?

I've been thinking about this for a few days and it's turning into an urge. I have previously shaved off hair at the nape of my neck. I just hate my hair so much. It's long right now, and it's just always in the way. I usually keep it up hit it's just uncomfortable.

I know it isn't socially acceptable to shave your head but I would either wear some kind of head covering or maybe wigs outside. I have had it cut really short like a mens style before and I loved it. Only I felt stupid in front of people and wore a hat a lot.

I don't know what to do. I feel like I'm going to end up just doing it out of sheer frustration and then regretting it

I could understand if you liked the shaved head look. Fine. But you're talking about wearing a head covering or a wig?? What's the point?? Why bit just have a shirt haircut?

I went for a number 2 cut start of lockdown. Love it and have kept it ever since. I just keep a beanie in my pocket because I feel the cold 🤣🤣

I'm in my 50's and have had no desire to wear a wig or grow my hair back. Also not had a problem changing jobs... it's not that 'out there' now.

It’s your hair. Do it.

I shaved my head when my battle with alopecia got really bad. I loved, loved the super-short buzzcut in the days and weeks afterwards. It just felt so strong and healthy compared to the long and lifeless falling hairs, and I loved the soft prickle of running my hands through it.Grin. I felt in control. It was great.

And I'm guessing it does give your hair the chance for a reset. All the newly grown replacement hair can be curated with good nutrition and hydration, and no cruel heat treatments or overwashing.

Regarding wigs and turbans, it is a really difficult transition to make but there is so much lovely stuff out there. You can get really decent mid-range wigs for £200-£400. If you look after them very well they can last a couple of years -- during which the ongoing costs of going to the hairdresser could easily be more than that amount.

I think synthetic wigs are great (provided you buy good quality ones). The hairs look completely realistic and they are much easier to keep in good condition than human hair wigs.

ok if you’re actually living and breathing hair loss due to treatment and have wigs, then ill accept what you’re saying - because I don’t have experience of the wearing the wigs themselves

Edited

Regrettably, I do have actual experience of this. I went to Raoul's (who are one of the best wigmakers/providers of wigs full stop) for mine. Believe me when I say that synthetic wigs, no matter how good, look like synthetic hair. Real hair wigs can cost thousands of pounds and are incomparable.

I actually did not wear a wig in the end, nor did I wear a turban or other head covering. It was quite liberating and far easier when I was bald. When my hair was buzzed v. short and again when it regrew and was still really short, that attracted far more attention and questions. At least when I was bald, people clicked why.

I have calmed down a little. I think I will go next week to a hairdresser and get a pixie cut

DreadPirateRobots · 18/01/2025 22:35

That sounds good. Good luck OP, and enjoy your new cut when you get it.

Hello OP,

I haven’t read the whole thread but there’s something in your first couple of posts that concerns me and I can’t quite put my finger on it. You sound a bit…manic? Please don’t take this unkindly and tell me to fuck off if you want as I realise you posted about hair (!) but how is your mental health generally?

Hi, yes I can recognise that my mood was off yesterday when I made the post. Everything was irritating me and I was all speedy. I'm taking new meds and I have not taken them for a few days because they make me feel really ill. I'm going to contact my psychiatrist's office on Monday.

It's so exhausting going through all these different medications all the time. I still would like to get a short haircut, but I feel I can wait to at least see a hairdresser now. I'm feeling a lot better today though thanks

That’s great to hear I hope they can get a switch up for you.

in the mean time have a think about what you really want it to look like rather than ahh I hate it and want to cut it all off then once you’ve got a medication regime that works for you if you still feel the same book an app (maybe take in a couple of pics to help you show what you want) then you rock that new hair!

loads and loads of women from all backgrounds and circumstances have short hair. There is absolutely nothing wrong with having short hair. All that matters is if you like it and you have made the decision to have it like that when you are not feeling off either up or down so you know it really how you want it rather than any influence from the illness.

im rooting for you @BabyCatMama

I shaved my head a few times. I love the shaved very short look on women. Think Annie Lennox and Helen Mirren Judi Dench very confident and sexy

noobiedoobie · 19/01/2025 03:25

I had a pixie cut in my 20s as I was going abroad for a year and needed low maintenance. It did suit me. I'm so tempted to do it again and not sure what stops me. Reasons for it - low maintenance. Reasons against- how it looks from the back, also it is thick hair and worry I will regret not enjoying it when I'm older. I think I'm waiting until it starts to thin out or something before going for it.
