If you know about fabric and dresses etc, come and tell me what fabric you think this is made out of?

the one in the middle JH2000
I know the pic is tiny (and annoyingly you can't view the skirt any bigger) but I really like the style/cut of the skirt (don't like the top bit at all BTW) because it seems swishy rather than floaty (I want to avoid floaty, princess-ish type wedding dress).

I should add that dress maker reckons it's chiffon over the top but I'm not convinced (because of aforementioned floaty-ness).

does it?! where?

no, not top in the middle, the second row in the middle. The one described as
"Copy of Audrey Hepburns first wedding dress"

It looks like a polyester chiffon over something more swishy like crepe de chine or the like, so really it's both floaty and swishy.

katierocket · 05/05/2008 12:32

hmmm, I don't mind some floaty but essentially I want it to kind of swing IFYKWIM.

what's crepe de chine?

could very well be a silk chiffon over, but it has more than one layer of different fabrics there.

katierocket · 05/05/2008 12:34

Yes it does doesn't it. I just think that for that partic style to work it's got to be in the right fabric otherwise will end up looking like one of those loo roll holder things e.g. huge wide, immovable skirt.

crepe de chine is beautiful it is a fabric with beautiful handle, feels quite heavy, but hangs just right! if the skirt has lots of gather, and you have a net under skirt, it could be just right for that dress style IMO.

solo · 05/05/2008 12:37

you wouldn't need a big net under skirt, just something to give it enough substance iyswim.

solo · 05/05/2008 12:37

Nice dress by the way!

katierocket · 05/05/2008 12:38

Aha, "heavy" is exactly the kind of feel i want it to have, so that it swings when I walk (god I sound like a right idiot).

thanks solo, the top bit isn't me at all so going for a fitted sleeveless bodice, but I do love the skirt.

Go to a fabric shop or department store and get them to unroll a few metres of crepe de chine and gather it in your hand at a good length, so you can get a feel for how it will fall...don't be scared, you need to know, it's an important dress! plus! I don't want you to shout at me if you don't like it! I love the stuff personally, and it's very classy!

great idea, thanks solo
