Bra to stop shelf-chest

Please can anyone recommend a bra that stops the middle-aged shelf situation. I don't think a wonder bra type thing is me anymore but I need something that pushes the sides a bit to prevent them hanging around near my armpits.

What size? Different brands for different sizes. A properly fitting underwired bra will prevent a mono boob. If you don't wear underwires because you find them uncomfortable, you haven't worn the correct size.

I’m 53 and a 32E or F depending on brand and I always go for balconette / balcony bras.

The shoulder straps sit a little wider which I find more comfortable and I like the shape this style gives me.

Especially as I’ve got older and lost a little bit of upper breast fullness; the balcony shape puts that back!

Mono boob! That's what I meant..I couldn't think what it was.

I wear Triumph and Fantasie underwired ones and I know I'm the right size. The Fantasie ones even have side support but I've noticed they aren't really doing the necessary.

Will give balconette a go!

Have a look at Freya or Elomi. They are very good at 'lift and separate'.

People always say this. I have tried and tried with underwires for nearly 40 years. They just aren’t comfortable, whatever the size.

old school but I have some m&s and shock absorber sports bras- that give a separated, almost ‘50’s style shape. The proper bra style ones, not fancy straps or crop top style.

they’re comfortable, supportive, wash well and look good under clothes. Even if they aren’t pretty frilly lacy things.

unsync · 15/01/2025 19:23

@Ohnonotmeagain That's unfortunate, I don't even feel like I'm wearing mine, even my sports bras are wired.

Hoppingabout · 15/01/2025 19:57

Thanks all. I'm.happy with underwire. It's just the spread! They now make it as far as my armpits almost. Very matronly. Will try all the bras suggested; loads of ideas to start on so thank you.

This is my go to, as recommend by Rigby and Peller.

I went in wearing a 32 B and came out in a 28DD/30E
I don't look like I have a big bust in this brand.
I buy two a year and always hand wash.

The price off that rigby and pelker bra. I find buy a bra that separates my boobs really difficult as there is little to no gap between them.

Irem going to a party in my late teens and the boys decided it would be a fun game to flick peanuts down my cleavage, it was a really hard game.

This was in the 80s when things were different.

I’m also a Marie Jo fan (I’m wearing one of the Avero bras as I type this) and have been for years. Ever since a Rigby & Peller fitting also.

Their bras are expensive but you can usually get them cheaper if you shop online and are patient. They occasionally pop up on Vinted.

I also really like Simone Perele bras. I only wear them or Marie Jo unless I’m doing sport when I wear M&S / Shock Absorber. They don’t seem to have the same magic on me as the earlier poster as I most definitely had a monoboob in a recent gym photo. Aargh!

(I’m 54, wear a 36D)

I think you should try and get to a bravissimo and get advice there. Also take your fave top or t-shirt and try various bras on under it.

It might be the type of top that maybe looks matronly? A lot of clothes just dont work well for women with big boobs.

Depends on the style. Newer “fashion” is for the crop top or fancy crossover/T-shirt backs, you need to go old school.

remember the m&s sports bras with the little tennis racquets on them? Back when that was the only style they did? Those ones 😂

Yogachick · 15/01/2025 21:33

ex bra fitter here, try Cleo Blossom,Cleo is part of Panache, gives a cracking rounded but up front shapex

My sports bras are old school. I don’t do crop tops (need more support) or crossover backs (too much of a pain to get on and off).
