Skincare where to start

I've never really been one for looking after my skin with lotions and potions. I've only started removing my makeup at night in the last few years (most of the time).

I'm now late 30's and have noticed a few small forehead lines starting, no eye wrinkles yet. I'm well aware they'll probably be here soon as I've noticed so many ppl my age have really deep eye lines and crinkles already!

I'm a bit lost as to what I should be using. Hyloronic acid, retinol 🤷🏻‍♀️ it all a minefield to me. Don't want to over do it either and end up with my skin in a mess. I have thought about dermatica or skin&me as maybe that seemed easier but wasn't sure if it was actually any gd.

The only thing I've tried in the last year was Ordinary 10% Argieeline solution. I'd heard it was good for forehead wrinkles. I used it for almost a year and it done absolutely nothing.

I currently usually wear a moisturising primer everyday but that's about it. Feel like I should probably be using something at night too. Looking for any advice please, thank you.

Try tretinoin from Skin&Me, Dermatica or Monderma. Retinoid is stronger than retinol which I find a waste for the same price. Or at least it never worked for me. I recommend adopting a moisturiser with hyaluronic acid and glycerin.

I’ve had the best luck with Cerave products. I have dry sensitive skin. I use their wash for dry skin before bed. Their vitamin c serum during the day then their moisturizer for dry skin. Then I use spf 50 daily. At night I put on their serum for dry skin then their night cream with ceramides. Once a week I use their retinol instead of their night serum before bed, and once a week I use their skin renewing nightly exfoliating treatment before bed in place of the serum. SPF, moisturizer, and exfoliating and retinolds are the best against wrinkles. Face tape before bed too helps and can replace Botox.

At this point, the brands are less important than actually starting to look after tour skin.

You need to clean evrry single night. With a skin cleanser, not soap. Then a serum to target specific issues usually ( a good intro might be a general serum with multiple ingredients et clarins double serum). Then a good moisteriser, ideally with peptides and/or ceramides.

Day you need a vitamin c serum, moisteriser ans spf. As you have done nothing for tour skin, I would consider starting with an all in one like the l'oreal vitamin c moisturising spf.

You can introduce a retinol but I would give it a fee weeks or even months of a routine first- some of these changes may unsettled your skin at first so adding a retinol until you have the right basics feels a lot to me. Also, I disagree completely about going straight for tret. Your skin is unlikely to cope out the gate. Start with a high street retinol and work up.

Firstly you need to start with what your skin type is. Then look for products for that. Mine is very dry.

You can have loads of stages to it I.e.

Cleanse - do you want a balm or creamy cleanser or oil which are generally good for dry skin?

Tone - some toners also double up as exfoliaters these days if they have glycolic acid, or you could exfoliate once a week separately
Serum - these are pretty awesome! Serums with Hyaluronic Acid seal in moisture. You can also get vitamin C serums - vitamin C generally has a brightening effect
Moisturise - so many choices
Oil - Rosehip oil is my current fave, its good for ageing apparently
SPF factor 50 every day!

At the serum and moisturise stage you can target things.

In terms of anti ageing I think retinol is like entry level then it moves up to tret. I'm building up to starting something with retinol around My eyes and forehead, having spent about a month or so getting the basics of a skin care routine in place and buying products. You can buy quite a lot of things on Vinted if you don't want to spend a fortune but also Boots and Superdrug carry quite a lot of products. Once you understand ingredients of what you are looking for it's also easier to not spend a fortune.

It's also better to introduce one product at a time even if its just for a few days or a week, so you know if something causes a reaction etc. Changes can take weeks to show probably because of skin renewal turnover so you have to stick with things for a while.

I've also been doing face yoga on You Tube which seems to help forehead wrinkles.

My daughters and I, all with different skin needs, have the same basic daily routine and I suggest it for you; Morning; simple ‘at the basin’ (or in the shower) cleanser, light moisturiser and SPF30 (all year round), followed by any make up. Leave a few minutes between steps for product penetration.
Evening; cleanse, treat, moisturise (if needed). The ‘treat’ step is what will help the appearance of fine lines and any wrinkles, and also lead to a clearer, more even skin tone over time. We all have different strength formulations from Monderma which work well (Skin & Me/Dermatica do similar). Now in my 60s, I have youthful, unlined skin which may be partially down to genetics, but I also believe there are no quick fixes and that consistent, daily skincare (plus SPF - even on cloudy days) combined with a healthy lifestyle is what produces the best results, whatever your age.

Thanks everyone.

I'd say my skin is combination I can get a bit dry in places but my T zone can get oily.

So basic routine and then adding in additional targeted treatments is the way to go. I might give one of the subscription places a try.

I do have some stuff already vitamin c serum, Liz Earle cleanse & polish and toner. I've gone through phases over the years of promising myself I'll start doing skin care and then it phases out again. I generally take my make up off with Micelar water but I've just had a Plouise cleansing balm delivered today.

Genetics definitely play its part, my mum looks amazing for her age and not particularly wrinkley. Hoping that's been passed down but I'd still like to try and help myself. If only fringes were back in, I cld pass for 20 🤣
