Stripping out hairdressers hair dye

I went to the hairdresser yesterday and I don't know what happened, but the colour is dreadful. Miles too dark and red. I said it was too dark, and she said it will start to fade in a couple of weeks. I look ridiculous.

I stood in the shower and washed it multiple times when I got home, but it hasn't shifted it. I'm waiting for the shops to open this morning and will hit the chemist for a couple of box removers and head and shoulders. I literally can't go to work tomorrow looking like this unless I wear a hat to the office.

I'm hoping that the box remover will work on professionally done dye in the same way it would a box dye?

Any tips on what else I can do on a Sunday other than order hats for same day delivery?

Fairy liquid

Is it dyed all over or sections?
What does it look like tied up even if you don't normally wear it up. Or even french braided if you can do that on yourself (or challenge yourself to learn to do) with less light able to shine on it it will look darker probably.

🤦🏻‍♀️ Do not use fairy liquid FFS! That will strip the cuticle layer and cause lots of irreparable damage.

Do you know if it's a permanent colour or a direct dye semi that was applied to your hair? Semi's will fade out through shampooing.

The box removers only work on permanent colour as they break down the molecules into tiny pieces so that can wash out through the raised cuticle layer. You need to understand the process in order to use them effectively.

It's dyed all over, and I have a short bob so not many options re styling it unfortunately.

I'm 60 and had been working with her to lighten my colour, and this honestly makes me look like Dot Cotton on a bad day.

I've got the first application of hair colour remover on - have to blast it with a hairdryer every 10 mins for an hour. Fingers crossed.

I have used the dye removers before, the most important stage is the rinsing, when you think you are done, rinse again and again and again

Mama1980 · 12/01/2025 13:26

My fingers are crossed for you op.
I've known patchy results from remover so I'd say just make sure you follow the instructions exactly and as the previous poster said rinse, rinse and rinse again.

It sort of worked... which I am frankly amazed at... but I am now left with a horrible pale orange colour so have gone from Dot Cotton to Donald Trump.

I have whacked on a mid tone box dye and am praying to the gods that I end up with something passable at the end of it, without my hair breaking off.

Not much help now, but I'd have gone back to the hairdressers and demanded they fixed it if it was wrong, before I started messing around with DIY jobs.

ClockingOffers · 12/01/2025 14:37

What's a mid toned box dye?? 🤔

The molecules that you didn't rinse away will re-enlarge so you'll have to either bleach it or cover it with something blue toned to neutralise the orange tones.

DecayingRelic · 12/01/2025 14:47

yes I too ended up with the very pale orange hair, the best thing to put on was an ash blonde temporary toner, this in fact made the hair medium brown and was nice

Was just about to say my daughter once used this on dyed dark brown hair and she ended up orange! Took a while to grow out! I think she actually dyed it bright red in the end which actually looked great!
