Long cardigan for a middle aged petite

I never wear cardigans, they tend to age me, but I really would like a long cardigan in charcoal. I love the look of this one in particular, but I feel it is very overpriced and it looks thinner that I'd like. Also, they don't have XS in stock anyway. Just wondering where online I might get a charcoal long cardigan that's not 100% synthetic. Celtic and Co could be an option although I feel they won't hang in the way I'd like them to.

I would ditch the cardigan and go for a long scarf with texture.

Sure, @MayIcarryYourSchoolBooks - but there’s a fine line between ‘plain’ and ‘drab’.

Though obviously every individual sees things differently.

To me this grey cardigan look is plain - but without the billion dollar highlights and shiny boots it would slip over into drabness, despite the expense of the separate items.

This would be 100 times better!

Or something like this but not acrylic:

@MayIcarryYourSchoolBooks you can wear what you want - but you’re presumably on a Style & Beauty board because you want to look stylish. With the benefit of extreme ancienthood I’d suggest that some of the elements of stylishness are paying attention to qualities like shape, texture, individuality …

IME as a petite person who wears cardigans of various types, there aren't too many standard fit ones which work well. As with coats, a petite sized one may look a heck of a lot better to avoid the 'child playing dress up' effect.

I don't have any recommendations at the moment though. They're the sort of thing I vaguely keep an eye out for and pounce if one which suits my criteria shows up.

ErrolTheDragon · 15/01/2025 10:01

@Preciousssssss - an 'oversized' cape on a petite woman is highly unlikely to look '100 times better' than the drabbest of cardis!😂

I’d go for something like this - the long length is less frumpy than hip length and the cable knit means it doesn’t look too much like a dressing gown.

here is another option I like, it’s thin so flows ok and it has big pockets

I really think you need to avoid hip/thigh length. Waist length good, below knee good, avoid anything between.

I don't think the below knee advice generally works well for petite women. Especially not if it's a regular fit garment. That Dorothy Perkins one is petite so might work though it'd probably be better with something of a heel like they've shown rather than the flatter boots in your Pinterest.

Personal style can be a lot more important than being on trend, op, and a theoretically stylish item with sleeves too long so you're faffing to extract your hands just isn't going to look good on anyone.

I'd try on something very plain in a good fabric like this.

I agree midi length isn’t great on petites if it’s a dress or skirt but I think it’s different if it’s open like a cardigan showing a short dress under - which is what OP intends.

Rainyaprilmonday · 15/01/2025 13:16

@Preciousssssss I love the stripey cardigan you showed upthread - do you know whree its from please? Just the thing to cheer up a dank grey January day!

Mountainormolehills · 15/01/2025 13:21

I’m petite (5’1, size 8) and wear very long cardigans (although generally I prefer to wear a thermal under my dress and ditch the cardigan) and I don’t find they drown me. I like fitted clothes and I have a Jaeger cardi which is similar to the Dorothy Perkins one posted up thread.
