Dry skin in the winter what moisturiser?

delilabell · 11/01/2025 11:13

I get really dry face skin in the winter mostly from being out in the cold quite a bit.
I have been using a collagen cream with moisturiser but it's not doing enough.
I need a collagen because my skin is starting to wrinkle.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated

When it's cold outside I apply a layer of Weleda Skin Food at night. Really thick and nourishing x

NearlyNewHip · 11/01/2025 11:16

They do a 'light' version that I use in the warmer months.

I also get very dry skin on my face in winter due to being outside & in the cold. Worst areas are around my chin area & cheeks near my nose. The Weleda skin food is not rich enough for me in winter and also affects my sensitive skin.

I already use a liquid exfoliator & drink lots of water but it was recommended to me that I use a moisturiser high in ceramides. I didn't want to spend a fortune on something I'd only use at this time of year & tried Boots DermaCare Ceramides Moisturising Cream. This was OK before it got really cold but it didn't prevent the dry skin areas appearing.

But I have found something that works for me at the moment. It's Cetraben Pro Hydrate Five Skin Saviour 75Ml, which I got in Tesco & is less than £10. I think it's supposed to be a body cream but it's fantastic. I've been using it for the past 2 weeks on my face & all the dry patches have gone. I'd definitely recommend this to try.

I put a very thin layer of Vaseline over my day cream - concentrating more on my under eyes and lips.

Thetrickcyclist · 11/01/2025 19:04

I use Oilatum cream, it's a very rich moisturising cream that one of my children used to use for eczema. I tried it in desperation as my facial skin was so tight and dry. I'd used Weleda skin food, a layer of Vaseline at night, various other creams but everything had either stopped helping or had irritated my skin which is quite sensitive. I thought the Oilatum would be too heavy and greasy but it's been great. A thin layer morning and night, and my skin is in much better condition. It doesn't have any sun protection though, so that would have to be added with another product

If I'm going out in the cold and wind, I put shea butter on my cheeks. I always have a metal pot of it on the go as lipbalm.

I like the sound of this @CinnamonJellyBeans 😀 do you use anything else to moisturise the rest of your face under the shea butter?

CinnamonJellyBeans · 11/01/2025 22:04

I use aldi day (SPF) and night creams, an aha toner at night for hyperpigmentation and the Ordinary retinol in squalene most evenings on top of moisturiser.

My skin is pretty good, middle age sagginess, but pretty bright looking and fairly even toned. No wrinkles, but have never sunbathed and always worn SPF.

I buy a massive bag of shea butter and decant it into metal pots from amazon. Best lipbalm ever. Stays on all day, smells nice, not greasy. Use it on hands, elbows, cheeks. Lasts forever.

Weleda Skin Food! My number 1 skin care product!
Like PP , I use the light version in summer.

Thank you for your reply @CinnamonJellyBeans is there a particular brand of Shea butter that you use/ recommend?

I get the organic unrefined from Naturally Thinking. I've just had a look: £10 for one kilogram.

I use Kiehls midnight recovery oil before bed in winter and it works wonders for me, been using it for years

it’s also specifically anti wrinkle!

MessyNDepressy · 11/01/2025 23:52

La Roche Posay Cicaplast balm over your moisturizer is amazing

Persista · 12/01/2025 21:32

Weleda skin food

rumanah · 13/01/2025 01:17

I have dry skin and use tret from Monderma and just bought Lancome hydra to go with it. It's scent is divine and lasts the day. Most other moisturisers I have to apply 2-3 times. Cerave does a job too though.

noobiedoobie · 13/01/2025 01:43

Agree Weleda Intensive is lovely. I actually also found Boots Simple the rich one to be quite okay. Recently been using the Ordinary with HA Factors and Photoceramides - it's very thick and has 5% urea - sorted my dry patches right out. Good value as don't need a lot. I've also previously used Cerave which is quite good.

I wasn’t sure about collagen and skin so sought AI advice …

2 things:

What’s your diet like? In winter especially you need exactly the things the answer below suggests, but also you need to consume as much EV olive oil as you can, plenty of wholefoods, dairy milk if you can, lots of herbs and spices …

Have you experimented with facial oils? Gentle exfoliation and them smothering your face in oil, day and night, is probably the most effective solution to dryness.

Can you recommend any gentle exfoliation please? For the first time in my life I'm experiencing dry flakey patches on my face and I have very sensitive skin. TIA.

saltysandysea · 13/01/2025 18:28

the most gentle exfoliator I use is from husk and seed https://huskandseedskincare.co.uk/products/gently-resurfacing-facial-exfoliant?variant=40300338905244

delilabell · 13/01/2025 20:55

Oh wow thank you so much for all these answers!!
I definitely need to drink more. I forget that helps skin (ridiculoisly)
I don't like the smell of shea butter 😬
Gentle exfoliator is a good call too.
Thank you again everyone

God that sounds lovely. I like those oily body salt scrubs. The only issue I find with oils is the tendency to clog the sink after a while but this sounds worth the annoyance!
