Face moisturiser?

I don’t have any skincare routine currently. I don’t wear make-up or use any products/ cream on my face. I wash my face with a baby wipe morning and night and sometimes use Vaseline if my lips are dry and that’s the extent of my beauty routine! Anyway, recently with a group of female friends who were all shocked I don’t use moisturiser and adamant I need to moisturise my face daily.

Are they right? Is moisturising really important? If so can anybody recommend a good simple and affordable moisturiser that I can buy online? I don’t know any brands and when I googled face moisturiser the brands coming up are £30+ for a tiny tub which seems ridiculous! Thanks in advance.

You may not need a moisturiser yet. I didn't until I hit 50. Baby wipes aren't really good for your skin. If you don't wear make up a soft make-up removing cloth with water works, if you do you may need a second cleanse.

One thing you don't mention is sunscreen, you need to wear a factor 30 sunscreen daily . That's your most important item. I have E45 facial sunscreen which is really moisturising as well.

I'm sure there will be loads of people piling in with extensive routines but you don't need them. In fact the beauty community is starting to consider that a lot of face stuff is causing people problems which they means they buy other products.

I’m 46 and don’t use moisturiser but I know I should. I use Elemis cleansing balm which is quite rich anyway but I always had oily skin.
move invested in a light Clinique (the yellow bottle) but I forget to use it half the time.

I didn't need moisturiser until menopause. Unfortunate really as it may have prompted me to use an spf

Id be less worried about the lack of moisturiser and more about the use of baby wipe to wash your face, I can't imagine that's doing much good.

I'd second a good sunscreen (Altruist or Thank You Farmer are good but there are loads). For a moisturiser that's really cheap, Waitrose Pure is £3.50 and it's fantastic. Unless you want to combine a sunscreen and moisturiser in one product, I'd go for that.

Edited to add ditch the baby wipes and use a flannel with warm water.

I didn’t know baby wipes weren’t good for the skin, I just use them for convenience but could switch to a cloth and water if that would be better.

I don’t wear sunscreen unless I am going outside on a sunny day, I didn’t think the chemicals in sunscreen were that good for you so wouldn’t be keen to wear it daily as I’m not outside a lot day to day. I go to work in the dark and come home in the dark at the moment so not sure I would need it daily but could be better at putting it on before I go outside even if it’s not a sunny day if that’s more important than moisturiser.

As for whether I’m happy with my skin, yes I think so? It doesn’t cause me any issues, my lips get dry in cold weather and I might get the odd spot once every few months but otherwise it’s fine I think. I’m late 30s. My friends were just so aghast I don’t use moisturiser I thought I must be missing something very important.

I found wipes don't get my skin as clean as using a cleanser, or indeed soap and water. I never really felt I had dry skin until into my 40s, now I use a no 7 one at night that seems to do the job

I started using moisturiser as a teen as I’d read an article about sunscreen - and my skin was greasy so thought it may make it better - it did. So I’ve been wearing sunscreen since I was 16 and I’m 51 now. I think it has reaped benefits, but I don’t know whether that’s because of the sunscreen or the moisturiser. Maybe both.
So yes, you may not need moisturiser, but I would recommend sunscreen, you can get face sunscreen for a couple of quid in boots which is effectively both then you aren’t spending any extra money.

Cerave - less than a tenner but amazing!

Baby wipes are not good for your skin and don't cleanse properly.

What you do need is a regular SPF. I like Superdrug's vitamin E range which is really cheap. Or a sunscreen like Clinique city block.
