Dyson Hairdryer or GHDs for long thick hair?

My current hair dryer is on its last legs and I want a good replacement.

I have VERY thick long hair. Every hairdresser I have ever had comments on how thick my hair is and how it holds water i.e. it is a nightmare to dry. I also have fibromyalgia so lightweight is key too.

I bought DD a Shark Flexistyle and I like the dryer but the styler part isn’t great the curls dropped out my hair so not bothered about an Airwrap. I want fast and lightweight without wrecking my hair. I have my hair bleached every 6 weeks (because it’s so thick it’s actually in good condition).

is the Dyson worth the money?

Do you want straight hair? I've got the Dyson airstraight and have really thick curly hair and the airstraight gets my hair from wet to pin straight in 15 mins and I love it so much

I’ve been looking at the Airstraight as well. To be honest my hair is pretty straight without using straighteners. I don’t know what would be better the Airstraight or a regular dryer?

The GHD is very heavy. It will take ages on thick hair. Definitely Dyson if it's affordable for you.

Just wanted to recommend Parlux if you hadn't considered the brand. I have a Parlux Digitalyon and it's very lightweight and powerful. I also have very thick, long hair and it dries very quickly. I was considering a Dyson but went with Parlux because of the price and I'm really happy with it.

Dyson all the way. Also - wrap your hair in an old tshirt after washing rather than a towel, it gets more of the moisture out

Look at Parlux, I got bought a Dyson a few years ago but always grab the Parlux. Night and Day better

I've got a ghd hair dryer and it's incredible, it is a bit heavier than a dyson though! I use a microfiber hair wrap when I've washed my hair and then cloud 9 magical quick dry potion and it's so much quicker than anything else I've ever used.

Shinyandnew1 · 10/01/2025 21:12

I've got Dyson and it's brilliant-very lightweight and dries pretty straight. DD has an airwrap and uses the curler bits but I think my hairdryer bit is better.

Another vote for Parlux (which I know wasn't on your list). I also have "enough hair for 4 people!" and it's the only hairdryer that gets my hair dry in anything like a reasonable time, and it's light. I have the 3200 compact.

CatPeachy · 11/01/2025 06:56

GHD is heavy, can’t recommend it unfortunately.

MiddleAgedDread · 11/01/2025 07:11

we have GHD in the shower rooms at work and they’re really heavy and I don’t think they dry my hair any faster than my cheap one from Argos

Batmanisaplaceinturkey · 11/01/2025 07:48

Don't bother with Dyson or GHD. In my opinion they aren't great for thick hair. Parlux advance is quite lightweight. Here's a comparison of models:

I have this Wahl hairdryer and I love it. It's really light and incredibly powerful.

I asked my hairdresser and she recommended Paris over Dyson as Dyson isn't a specialist for hairdryers and they tend to not last as long. Also my hair is very thick and I've had Hair botox it has been a complete game changer in terms of drying my hair to a smooth finish - so much easier and I don't need to spend so long drying my hair to a smooth finish.

Eldermillenialyogi · 11/01/2025 18:31

The Dyson hair dryer is lightweight and faster than others. If you're happy with a blowdry then go for that. Straighteners give a different look to a blowout. I blow dry my hair with the Dyson then straighten with some very old wide plate ghds but my hair probably isn't a think as yours (very curly)

Really? I tried a wet to straight dryer years ago and it didn't do that. X

I’ve just replaced my old Parlux of over 10 years. It actually still works but had become intermittent so think it was starting to conk out.
I got a Parlux Advance Light. Nice colour options too! Expensive but not when you consider that cheaper dryers usually only last 2 to 3 years IME.
Its much lighter than my old one.
