Office Shoes - are these fashionable?

Isittimeforbedyet1 · 09/01/2025 13:28

Help please. I’ve got a job interview and no idea what shoes to wear. It’s office based in a design type business so I want to look vaguely fashionable! Thinking a top and black trousers, with these?

Any thoughts gratefully received!

They're neither fashionable nor stylish. You want something either chunkier or else a flat velvet Mary Jane/gondola pump - they're really current right now (and something you'll get a lot of wear out of as they go with most things). If your white trainers are super clean, then it will be absolutely fine to wear them.

Most importantly, don't bother buying new shoes unless you love them and know you'll wear them irregardless of if you get the job. Speaking of which, good luck!

Deesmond · 09/01/2025 21:08

What is a gondola pump? Google is not revealing.

Isittimeforbedyet1 · 09/01/2025 21:11

Thank you all for the luck. To the poster asking for more details, I don’t want to share too much as it’s quite outing but it’s more of a client facing senior admin type role rather than a design position.

Rest of the outfit is likely slim fit black trousers and a top in a bright colour.

I own a design business and you'd be absolutely fine coming to an interview in smart trainers, depending on what the rest of your outfit looked like. They can look really sharp. So I have questions: what exactly is the kind of business you are interviewing for, and what role within it, and what are you planning to wear with the shoes?

What would you consider 'smart trainers'? I always get trainers wrong.

WoppingBigBackside · 09/01/2025 21:53

They'd go very smartly with those @Isittimeforbedyet1 . Good luck, hope you get it.

Is it in London? I work in the creative industry and trainers are absolutely fine. Shoes - rarely seen any more on women and heels went extinct about 10 years ago.

I work central London too and would recommend NOT to wear trainers for an interview, unless you're interviewing for the art director position at some uber hipster start-up in shoreditch , then it's fine but make sure those trainers are Adidas latest fancy design and new. If it's an admin position wear casual smart trendy urban, Zara style and shoes that you feel very comfortable but are smart at the same time. Once you get the job and figure out the office dress code you maybe able to pull out the trainers, just not for the interview.

Do you work in a creative agency? Although most of my clients also wear trainers and that’s across lots of different sectors in corporate roles.

What nonsense. Yeah heels aren't seen anywhere near as much as they used to be, but "shoes rarely seen" ?

[Query, why are so many posters on here who are in the "creative industries" so keen on looking just like everyone else]

I've worked in the creative field all my life. Clients are paying so they don't need to impress you, they can dress as they please, someone coming for an interview is a whole different story, you want to look smart and 'put together', running shoes are too casual but smart trainers are fine. Once you've been working there for a while you can pull out the running shoes.

My 30 year old daughter calls them men shoes. I'm not a fan either. They look really uncomfortable.

With all due respect, no.

Please ask her to consult the timeless classics of yesteryear style, Audrey Hepburn in Funny Face for a start.

WoppingBigBackside · 09/01/2025 22:41

@PhaedraStar , I work in a field where we dress smart casual and i wear what I like. I tried wearing what I thought was smart casual and didn't like the clothes on me so now I wear something like a dress and chelsea boots. I might look a bit out of place but I don't care.
The women don't wear trainers.

Or alternatively - you're not slavishly looking like everyone else !

It's interesting in my office but the under 35 female bunch are starting to dress smartly and some of under 30s, very much so. Not the pencil skirts and heels of yesteryear, but tailored trousers, flat shoes (loafers, pumps and Mary Janes) lots of dresses , and definitely Chelsea boots and dresses. Men are mostly stuck in trainers.

I particularly noticed one of the trainees today in black trousers, not dissimilar to the Serena Bute ones, black, boxy, waist length roll neck jumper and pointy black low heeled pumps. She was smart- not smart casual.

(Oh btw, I'm usually IHaveNeverLivedinTheCastle- name changed for a one off and forgot to change back before posting here)

Doesn't that defeat the purpose of a namechange, to post what your old name was under your new one?

What would you consider 'smart trainers'? I always get trainers wrong.

Nike Air Force One, leather Camper style as shared by someone further up, Adidas Advantage, even Adidas Gazelle (though maybe not for an interview, def ok for work though in my industry)... High street versions of these trainers - the kinds of things that hang up in Next or you buy at Cos - also fine. The key is clean, with clean laces. If they're trainers you'd wear to the gym, or walking the dog, they're not smart trainers.

I don't work in London, or in any major city, and while I am 'a creative', the client facing peeps don't dress formally. Smartly, yes - not formally.

If the OP doesn't feel comfortable in trainers, all good. The most important thing is wearing something that feels 'her'. But if I were her and didn't fancy smart trainers, I'd wear an ankle boot I already had with the trousers and top she describes. The loafers she shared are really quite formal, and design environments are always smart, but rarely formal. Pointy toed flats would also work if she has any, or mary janes...

For the majority of people for work something that doesn’t look like you’d go to the gym in. Though I know stuff like New Balance 530s are “in”, they might be too casual for many workplaces.

so something like these Vans or the coloured adidas specizals, etc

And the trainers of the moment currently are Salomon xt6 but good luck finding any in a popular colour! And again while I would happily wear them for work something places might think they’re not smart enough

Isittimeforbedyet1 · 10/01/2025 10:17

So, in the end I’ve purchased a (slightly different) pair of loafers and some trousers, I’ll see when they arrive how it all looks together.
I’ve always worked in an environment where I wear uniform so that’s why this is so tricky for me and also why I’m having to purchase everything new. I take the points on the loafers potentially being overly formal but I think I’m best to go with them because I may need something for future interviews if this doesn’t work out. I can always dress them down with jeans etc if appropriate.
Thanks again for the input, it genuinely has been incredibly helpful!

Those are very nice. Would go easily with trousers. Good choice.

None of the women really dress the same. One day I had planned on wearing an outfit, but at the last minute changed my mind. When I got in, my tall, slim, younger, pretty colleague had something almost identical on. I was glad that I'd worn my safe comfortable outfit. It's quite international, so we're all different shapes and ages. We have 2 with the same first name and similar surnames but they look completely different.
I get people who are roughly the same height and with similar hairstyles (or hair colour and moustache if men) mixed up. The blonde bob is the worst for that.
