Daniel Field not great grey coverage ? Need a semi permanent recommendation

I've been using Daniel Fields water colour on my hair. Whilst I really like it, I find that the grey coverage isn't great - within a week it's back.

My hair is curly and dry (I'm post menopausal) and not improving in this respect, probably because more grey is coming through - if I didn't dye it, I'd probably be completely grey quite quickly.

So - any recommendations for a non harming semi that does better grey coverage?

Is probably worth looking at a few hairdressers to see if they name their gloss products.

I use josh Wood colour gloss and it's great for my sparse well scattered grey but I think it's poor on high percentage grey.

I have thick, very dry course hair that is probably about 60% grey now (hard to tell - I never let it go grey!) and I'm still using L'Oreal Casting Creme gloss. But, and this is important, I have to put a LOT of effort into the roots as otherwise it fades quickly. So I usually use the little nozzle thing all over the hairline/roots, then rub it in enthusiastically. Then repeat. I do this at least 3 times before I apply the colour to the rest of my hair.

My hair is also quite short and I use the entire bottle (the repeated bits over the roots takes a lot of product) so if your hair is a bit longer, I would recommend possibly having two bottles to hand, even if you don't use the second one entirely.

I usually dye it every 4-5 weeks which is the other change - I used to redo it only once every 6-8 weeks. But also, with shorter hair I wsh it more often so that could be part of the reason. Having said that, I did it about a week before Christmas and it's still looking good. It does tend to just suddenly collapse though! Grin

I used to go to headmasters for semi permanent coloured glossing to cover my grey roots every 5-6 weeks. Things got so prohibitively expensive post-covid (paying £58 a pop) that I did some research and found out that they use Redken shades EQ which you can buy from Sallys. It’s £15-20 per bottle which lasts about 3-4 uses and same again for a huge bottle of the developer. You can blend the colours too, lots of professional hair dressers share their formulas on Instagram if you need inspiration. The grey coverage is really good but you need to make sure you’re adding colours with codes “NB” in them to the mix which are formulated to provide extra grey coverage. Super easy - just google Redken shades EQ grey coverage and there’s lots of helpful videos on YouTube. I’ve now switched to Redken colour gel lacquers for my roots which is permanent and I put the semi-permanent coloured gloss through ends to tone.

Thanks, that's really helpful.

What do you do about the dryness? It must be because it's mostly grey. I do moisturise, use good products but it's looking like crap atm, lots of 'light' frizz around crown

I use the revlon one on Amazon, it's amazing and covers my grey 100pc. I went to the hairdresser's today and she said wow your hair is always in such fabulous condition what do you use. Imm 55 and my hair is more than 70pc grey and super shiny and soft. Nutricare it's called

@Nutribioadvanced One of the reasons I've coloured my hair for years, even when I was just colouring it basically a version of my base colour, is that I find the colour seems to help keep it glossy and shiny.

Yes to good quality shampoo and conditioner - I use l'oreal excellence for coloured hair. I have also started using a hair oil - I was always worried it would make my hair greasy etc, but it really doesn't - I guess because my hair is so dry. And DD's hair is very curly and dry and long and she can get away with even MORe product - oil, leave in conditioner etc.

I'm not even using a fancy expensive one but Pantene Keratin one at the moment. My hairdresser uses a l'oreal one on me I think. It's worth experimenting with them to find one you like (dd likes the Moroccan hair oil one), and to understand how much to use and when to put it in. If I'm not really blow drying I'll shove some in with wet hair and it helps to stop my hair from dryin gin a huge frizzy mess, or if I am blow drying, I usually put some on when my hair is still slightly damp but not wet.

Also, a few years ago when my hair condition really deteriorated, I used the Innolux Elixir leave in conditioner for a few months - it really helped to improve the base condition of my hair.

Thanks all. I went to Sally's, got a Wella to mix up. We'll see. I'll try it out and then see where I'm at. Will also look at using an oil.

Oh to be back in the days when I wasn't 70% grey! My hair used to be my crowning glory 😥
