Returning wool for pilling?

I bought a wool (94%) and cashmere (6%) jumper in the Reiss sale last week. It's gorgeous, exactly what I wanted, really cosy and perfect fit. But having worn it for four days, the pilling is crazy imo, both little lumps and a general fuzzyness on the under side of the sleeves and sides, where they rub. I've been holding off buying a jumper because I'm so fed up of poor quality and I thought I'd got a good one. I think I'm going to return it, but want to check if I'm expecting too much.

I guess it depends how bad it is. All knitwear pills. Longer fibres can mean less pilling but under arms and sides of boobs will pill to some extent regardless of quality

Separately if you want no pilling, try alpaca. Apparently that doesn't pill

Sugarnspicenallthingsnaice · 06/01/2025 21:57

I think pilling is pretty normal, I have a cheap defuzzer from Amazon which takes care of that.

Just use a comb. It’ll stop pulling after a while. I have Brora cashmere and even that pills.

It’s very therapeutic, combing the pilling from a jumper 😁

Good to know even Brora pills! I have a comb that I use on other knits, I am just disappointed at how quickly and how much this has.

Unfortunately I'm very allergic to alpaca.

Sounds bad quality to me. I’d return it.

Quality wool does pill a little but a little
comb/ shave reverts it back to good as new. Poor quality wool pills quickly and rapidly looks cheap. Trust your instinct.

Agree with this. The one piece of non pilling knitwear I have is this: uk.dilling.com/product/womens-merino-woolalpaca-knit-cardigan-pg-42010-0200-956?gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAiAm-67BhBlEiwAEVftNjrFcm5MlbLPuXle2S8sxv7JCyhY-Fu-Raknezqx4bUmhx1vRrSTdRoCAYMQAvD_BwE. I've been wearing it all day in this freezing weather and it's so warm too.

TeaHagTeaBag · 12/01/2025 14:03

As an FYI, I brought the jumper back today. The very nice woman working there empathised as she showed me the pilling on the jumper she was wearing, which I presume was their stock too? Anyway, full refund, no quibbles.

It isn't actually THAT normal at all!
I have older cashmere and wool that still haven't pilled, yet compared to more recent White Co, Reiss and John Lewis are obviously of higher quality, even though they were cheaper!

I even have a vintage cashmere jumper from Ebay that doesn't pill much at all, compared to modern higher high street brands.
Sadly I think that now you'd have to go to Brora, or Johnstons of Elgin for that same confidence. It's pathetic.

I just don't buy it now. I prefer outdoor focused brands such as Finisterre and Fjallraven. Not quite as louche-lux but definitely of a higher standard.

KittenPause · 15/01/2025 15:36

Most wool knitwear generally pills

That said my friend has a lovely cashmere mix jumper from Hobbs which is weaved in such a way it doesn't pill and it feels gorgeous. She's had it a couple of years now

KittenPause · 15/01/2025 15:37

It's a very very tight knit so you can't see it's wool or the knitted ness of it if that makes sense

Edited

I agree - I have older cashmere jumpers from M&S and even George at ASDA (talking 10 years old!) which haven't pilled at all but any cashmere I have bought in the past 4 or 5 years has been a disaster. It is so annoying.
