Recommend a lovely night cream for my 50yo skin

My face is dropping! It's dull and dry and the fine lines are getting worse. I'm going to make a massive effort to increase my water intake but I'd also love a really good cream to put on before bed that I can feel feeding my skin overnight.
My skin can be a bit sensitive but it's not too bad.
I saw the Charlotte Tilbury Magic Night Cream recommended online and it sounds lovely. What do people think?
Please give me your recommendations. Happy to spend up to around £50 for the right one so that counts out quite a few of the top end ones.

personally i like the blue nivea, the white nivea if you can get a non vegan one (espec in summer as bit lighter than blue) and i have found lidl night creams to be very good. as you can tell i'm pretty budget, but dont want to pay for packaging/scents unless they actually make a difference

BusterGonad · 06/01/2025 13:20

I have to agree, the Nivea creme in the blue tin is pretty hard to beat, it isn't fancy but it's been around for years for a reason. A fancier brand is Nuxe, their ultra comforting face balm is wonderful, as is their Crème Prodigieuse Boost Multi Correcting Eye Balm Gel. I repeat bought both for a while and probably still would if it was available where I lived.

Tretinoin is best for fine lines. I wouldn't bother with OTC for a night cream.
Monderma and Skin+Me sell tubes for £20ish.

Purplecatshopaholic · 06/01/2025 15:47

Tretinoin then a night oil. I like Kiehls or Erborian.

rumanah · 06/01/2025 17:47

Kiehls is great

Doggymummar · 06/01/2025 17:52

I use retinol and hyaluronic acid. Just from Amazon and the Nivea+ one overnight that is £3 currently at suoerdrug it's an overnight exfoliator then wash off in the morning and apply retinol and hyaluronic acid followed by moisturizer and spf if leaving the house.

CharlotteCChapel · 06/01/2025 18:21

I've just used up my Nivea and it could easily be an expensive cream. I also use tret from Dermatica.

The OTC retinol aren't really strong enough anymore.

A facial oil such as the one by Clarins is worth a try. Elemis say to put a moisturiser on top to seal it in. Sound correct but who knows…

BlackCat25 · 06/01/2025 19:26

I’d say start on some Tretinoin to speed up cell turnover: dull skin, fine lines and wrinkles are all improved that way. I get mine from Monderma. If you enjoy the sensation of a well moisturised skin, you can then follow your nightly formula with a nourishing cream a few minutes later. This will give you results that moisturiser alone absolutely will not.

dingledangledoos · 06/01/2025 22:54

Google says that tretinoin is prescription only on the UK. How do you get hold of it?

OP posts:
OhBling · 06/01/2025 23:23

Yes, I think tret is prescription only. And not that helpful to go straight into it if you've never used a retinoid before.

I also quite like the Nivea ones. But actually, I'd recommend using Neutrogena:

Start with the straight Retinol Boost Night Cream then you can work your way up to the Retinol Boost+ cream/serum. Use it no more than twice weekly to start, building up to every night. When you can tolerate that comfortably, move up a level (their website has useful info on moving up the levels). I'd also do a week or two with a good night cream before you launch into retinol.

Personally, my skin is very dry (sounds like yours is too) so I top my retinol with one of their night creams. I like the Hydro Boost range - the night cream is probably a good choices for you although I think I'm using the Gel Cream at th emoment.

Finally - are you cleaning your face with something appropriate? I have foudn as I've got older I really really need a balm cleanser. It is much gentler on my skin. I use the Farmacy Green Clean which will push you over budget, but the Sali Hughes one gets good reviews, and the Body Shop camomile one is pretty good. I've also heard that the Elf one and the Superdrug one are both good as well on the more budget side. I do like Elf skincare so that's probably th eone I'd try if it was me.

Retinol is your friend and tretinoin is your best friend. I'm trying out "And Begin" which has tret included but I have been using tret for about three years now. However, they do ask for your retinol experience during their questionnaire so you could start from scratch. Tret changed everything for my fine lines, wrinkles and general skin appearance. I was without it for about three weeks and could tell.

Aside from tret - I'm not an influencer but deal with beauty companies every day. My favourite creams and serums from the past few years of working with multiple beauty brands:
No7 Future renew serum
Vichy Mineral 89 serum
Ole Henrikson peptide Cream in winter
No7 Vitamin C cream/Vichy Mineral 89 moisturiser in summer
Pai rosehip face oil for night
Charlotte Tilbury face oil/No7 Youthful face oil oil for day

But this is what works with my skin. I like the Charlotte Tilbury day cream and face oil, not so much the night cream - it has a very heavy texture. I do sometimes put it on an area where my skin barrier can be compromised and it is effective. At night I use the And Begin serum, wait about an hour then use the Ole Henrikson cream followed by their oil or the Pai oil.

Clarins Orchid Treatment Oil is wonderful for mature skin. Use at night or in the morning before make up for a lovely glow. Somewhat pricey but a bottle lasts for several months and you literally need a few drops. Press it into cleansed, treated skin. Also, yes; Tretinoin is only available on prescription in the UK (online via Monderma, Dermatica etc) as it’s a powerful ingredient and needs professional monitoring. The combination of retinoid + moisture + spf is the gold standard for topical maintenance of healthy skin, imo.

I'm nearly 50 and have spent the last year improving my skin. I use the Neutrogena Boost Retinol Night Serum as mentioned above. I really like it and it's almost an oil in its formula. Have noticed a big difference in my skin using it. I also use Alpha H liquid gold once or twice a week.

I'm planning to try Tret now my skin tolerates retinol.

If youre using the serum with just the straight Retinol Boost - it might be worth trying the serum or cream in the Retinol Boost+ range before you move to tret. There's quite a big difference I have found so it might be a good option before trying Tret. It is a bit more drying which is why I do like a moisteriser over (I haven't tried the serum though so not sure if the Boost+ serum is as lovely and hydrating as the regular one).

The person upthread who mentioned the Clarins oil - I like that as well at this time of year when my skin is SO dry and it definitely makes me feel like my overall complexion is good - but I don't feel it has the anti-aging aspects? I have never atually bought it - I always have those tiny little sample/giveaway bottles and yes, they last FOREVER. Grin

Definitely try a retinol then follow it up with either Clarins facial oil or M&S Ultimate Sleep Cream. I switch between both of the latter so get both if you can afford to.

Tina4218 · 11/02/2025 23:56

I use tretinoil, skin glowing like in my 20s. I use it every other night ( 0.05). Another product I like very much is Tatcha, the dewy skin cream. It is Japanese brand. I tried many creams in my life expensive and not, but this is something. I use it in the day, night or when I want to see my skin to glow more. It moisturizes the skin without oily residue making glass effect. I got it for Christmas. I think It is around £50, will be definitely “my keeper “. The other product I like very much that I use under my eyes for the night is Korean brand Versed smooth landing advanced retinoid eye balm. I see the crow feet disappear from using it ( work like iron in the night). For the day is Australian Alpha H liquid gold eye cream. They also have amazing Liquid Gold Midnight Reboot Serum! May be get samples of few products (I found on eBay it is sold relatively cheap).

Tina4218 · 12/02/2025 00:07

I bought Tretinoin online without prescription. Just search it. I have got gel version ( due to oily skin) by Menarini brand.

Jillfi · 12/02/2025 01:47

My dad, an Eastern European displaced person, was advised to use blue Nivea instead of aftershave when he was in a mineworkers' hostel, I kid you not.

He died at the age of 86 and had lovely skin.

To try to ease the dreaded face droop, use collagen and peptide rich creams supplemented with serums. Currently using Vichy Collagen creams and loving them. Using ROC Correxion stick for neck and jawline. Use retinol twice a week (as I dont have many wrinkles at 50, it is the slow steady loss of firmness Im more concerned about).
