Comfy walking boots for dodgy feet/ankles

Hi have a lot of problems with my feet ankles and knees - I've been working with a physio which helps. I want some ankle boots just for walking the dogs etc. I have some Merrells but find them very hard and unforgiving. Any recommendations for something supportive but comfortable? Thanks.

Hotter - nice and lightweight, comfortable and supportive x

Check out Reiker boots. I live in mine. Incredibly comfortable.

Ive got these OP, I didnt buy them from the Woden site as the postage is terrible due to Brexit and I found them cheaper in the UK online somewhere, cnat remember where

They are very squidgy, I have had to take the insoles out and put in my Superfeet insoles that support my arch with a deep heel cup.

I have never really got on with 'walking boots' I dont like them so big and heavy that I cant move my foot, often they're very stiff, also some of them hurt around the ankle. Ive been through quite a lot of them. Also I have very wide feet.

So far so good with these, might need some tweaking with the insole, might change it to a superfeet green, I think they're higher in the arch

Tessa Waterproof - Dark Olive

Tessa Waterproof is a hiking-inspired boot featuring a characteristic track sole for an edgy look. The boot is crafted from textile and suede with beautiful details in fish leather. Soft PU-foam is used for the insole of the boot, which is both lightwe...

Just to say I find Rieker and HOtter not wide enough in the toe.

Lentilweaver · 05/01/2025 19:50

I just bought some Berghaus Supalite walking boots in the sales. Really light and comfortable.

HPandthelastwish · 05/01/2025 19:52

I was going to recommend Merrells but they aren't working for you. Have you got specific women's ones as they are designed for a women's gait apparently and have you tried adding an innersole?

CanelliniBeans · 05/01/2025 19:52

I always find Timberland hiking boots very comfortable and long lasting. I walk the dog through hilly fields and woods, longer walks of about 8 miles at weekends, and my current pair have lasted four years to date and are really comfy.

CharlotteCChapel · 05/01/2025 19:55

I have a pair of jack wolfskin, they were comfortable from the off.

Randomontheinternet25 · 05/01/2025 20:18

I bought Colombia ones for half price via m&s there were great, but come up small so I returned them

NeedToKnow101 · 05/01/2025 20:24

I have dodgy knees and hips and find trainers much more comfortable than walking boots. Not great for mud but in most conditions I'd just wear trainers.

This is so true, much more flexible and comfortable, more support strangely enough but the problem is the roads are so wet, uneven pavements create massive puddles and round our way, despite being in a town many of the roads dont have pavements, they have mud slicks at the side of the road which you're forced into by idiot drivers because of course you're in their way! So waterproof boots are needed.

Scarpa trainers
Gris Sport boots
Good fitting socks also makes boots more comfortable
What would your physio say about using walking poles? I have dodgy knees and find walking poles really helpful.

Trail running shoes e.g. GEL-VENTURE 10 | Women | Black/Carrier Grey | Women's Trail Running Shoes | ASICS UK

Like you, OP, I've found some higher end brands rather heavy and stiff. In fact I'm cleaning up such a pair to give to the op shop.

When they come in at Aldi, try their women's hiking boots. Lidl probably do them too, though Lidl doesn't exist in Australia so I can't vouch for this. They're light, comfortable, and support the foot well. Also easy to get your foot in and out of. I use mine for dog walking too.Smile

Also dead cheap.

ObieJoyful · 05/01/2025 21:09

I struggle with boots, due to my wonky feet and ankles, so I wear trail runners.

The best ones I’ve found are the waterproof ASICS ones. Wide toe box, but fit beautifully around the back of the shoe. Light and extremely grippy.

I walk a lot, and I’ve worn these for the past 5 years. I buy a new pair each year.

Wow so many replies! Looks like a common problem. The Merrells I have are the waking show type so don't come up around the ankle, I find the insole very hard. I do have some insoles from Simplyfeet which I have also tried in them but still wasn't happy. Also they're not very grippy in ice as the sole is very hard. I think I'm looking for something a bit softer but that will still support my feet. I do live rurally (honestly!) and so need something g suitable for muddy fields, trainers don't really work. I'll have a look at some of the suggestions, thanks so much,

Can you still get hi tec walking boots?
I have an emergency pair (I've just been in the boot if the car)and the are really comfortable, good flex to that sole but supportive

cleanable · 06/01/2025 13:44

Legero boots and shoes are very comfortable and light.

Might not do for muddy fields but good for walking generally.

Lentilweaver · 06/01/2025 14:05

These are the Berghaus ones I bought. I got them at half price and they are still at 40% off. Very light and comfy. Fine for muddy tracks.

I have a pair of Joya Walking Boots as attached. I have hyper mobility & Plantar fasciitis & these are really comfortable, with a very supportive footbed.
They were recommended by my specialist podiatrist along with Hoka Clifton's.

I’ve seen some of those that look really good, do you know if they come up true to size I am usually a 5.5
