My 14 year old has lived a life in joggers. He even packed in wearing school trousers last year and moved full time to the jogger life.

He now says he'd like a pair of jeans. I am overjoyed as I'm a jeans person myself and I'd love to see him in jeans but I don't know where to start with sizing, brands, styles etc.

He's slightly tall for his age but not unusually so, and his other clothes are branded sportswear.

Any pointers? I did think I might start with primark but he's never tried clothes on in a shop in his life. I've explained to him that jeans are different and really need to fit. He's a men's size medium in most of his stuff.

Help meeeeeee

16 year old DS wears HandM loose fit jeans. DS wears a kids 14-16 and he is short for his age but they are suitably baggy/long. They come in a variety of shades.

mumonthehill · 05/01/2025 11:44

Ds17 only wears Levis. Buys on vinted though. If you go to a Levi shop then you can try different styles on and length. Ds very tall and other than a sale pair of Next ones these are his go to.

SunnieShine · 05/01/2025 11:45

Ask him what he wants.

SirChenjins · 05/01/2025 11:46

Mine is 17 and wears jeans from H&M or Zara - he and his friends all wear the relaxed or loose fit jeans. He really needs to try on a few styles to see what he likes/suits.

Moier · 05/01/2025 11:46

My teenage Grandsons are more grungy baggy style jeans or cargos now.

Hoppinggreen · 05/01/2025 11:48

Mine has 1 pair but doesn't like them, I think they were Hollister.
He wear trackies or combat pants in black and khaki

Vettrianofan · 05/01/2025 11:48

DS17 wears Asda black jeans. He couldn't care less about brands. Think they're economy ones, not expensive.
£10 a pair, black straight fit jeans.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 05/01/2025 11:48

My nephew wears baggy wide legged caarharts. He's into skateboarding so I think this may be very tribe dependent! But

Butterbeanbutterbo · 05/01/2025 11:49

my DS was similar (lives in joggers!)and has just started wearing jeans. He also has h and m loose fit in 2 different shades. He is 6 foot and slim (has an M in joggers), in jeans he takes a 30 waist and 32 leg. He also has more traditional looking jeans from next in same size

Mbear · 05/01/2025 11:51

DS is 15 and has some Levi’s which he wears to death. Isn’t particularly into named stuff as such - it was just a handy place to shop with different fits and waist/leg sizes so easy to navigate and repeat buy. (He is a creature of habit!)

WithASpider · 05/01/2025 11:53

DS 15 wears George relaxed fit. He's mainly in joggers too!

I refused to buy a designer label for his first pairs out, partly because he's still growing but mainly so they wouldn't be an expensive mistake. He knows he can ask for different ones but he likes the George ones.

dingledangledoos · 05/01/2025 12:02

My 15yo DS still mainly wears joggers but he does have one pair of jeans that he likes. They were from River Island. I've noticed most of his friends have started wearing baggy jeans that wouldn't have looked out of place in the nineties! I think they look great but DS isn't convinced.
Good brands would be: Uniqlo, Zara, Urban Outfitters, Carhaart.
Once she's found a style he likes, Vinted is the best place to shop.

RayonSunrise · 05/01/2025 12:04

Loose fit/baggy is definitely the way to go for boys' jeans at the moment! The 90s are definitely back in menswear.

Height and relative slimness can have a big impact on which high street shops will work best for your DS. With both my sons I found Zara and Primark great til they hit their adolescent growth spurts, then they were way too short.

I've found H&M the only shop that seems to adequately cover that in-between stage when boys are man-height but still shaped like skinny kids. The 14+ size is a godsend!

mamaduckbone · 05/01/2025 12:07

I second H&M as a good starting point. They have a range of styles at a good price, either in the large youth sizes or small men's.
Ds15 wears very baggy jeans at the moment from Weekday. He's in men's sizes though.

dottyaboutstripes · 05/01/2025 12:14

His happened here at Xmas! 15 yr old ds just wanted "baggy". I ordered from hollister, he liked them but they were huge (he wears men's M in joggers and I got 32)
So I sent him to town and he chose H&M I think they were size 29.

HoppingPavlova · 05/01/2025 12:18

My sons have always worn Levi’s since mid-age teenagers. Reasonably priced and last a while and tend to keep their looks for the majority before wearing out. It’s only a faff once as they have to go try on what seems like a thousand styles/fits but then that’s it, mine only ever did that once. They now order that style online forevermore when needing replacements, and the bonus is each style seems to come in eleventy billion colours/shades so all preferences/needs are catered to. All of mine have a pair of ‘good’ black as well as ‘casual’ black and a nice pair of the really dark blue colour for better occasions, then otherwise a few shades of the blue.

The hardest bit is knowing whose is whose if they are the same style/size so they put a coloured dot on the inner tag whenever they buy a new pair. Same as undies otherwise it drives whoever sorts the dry washing mad.

SnowyIcySnow · 05/01/2025 12:20

DS lives in jeans and cargo trousers.
We buy whatever we can. Choice is exceedingly limited. Usually ASOS, as they have the size as a possibility, unlike many shops.
Ideal size 26" waist, 34"legs. Slim pickings until he hits about a 30"waist.

MorrisZapp · 05/01/2025 12:53

Brilliant advice, thanks so much. Surprised to see loose and baggy topping the charts but I haven't been very observant of teen jeans lately. My first stop is to get him to try on a pair of DPs jeans just for a size and shape comparison. I think he'll be OK with unbranded to start with but he does love a label, as I must confess I always did too.

Can't beat that tiny red pocket flash on a pair of Levis.

My DS, 16, came downstairs in a pair of jeans last week and I nearly fell over in shock.

They're a loose style and he looks great in them in a way I could only have ever dreamt of (lucky him being tall and slender).

He bought them off Shein 🤦🏻‍♀️

If he loves labels then absolutely the best advice is to go to the shops, try on for size, then buy from Vinted or Depop. Vintage shops are great for denim too.
All the teens I know are excellent buyers of pre-loved stuff. Such a refreshing attitude.

EllaPaella · 05/01/2025 14:55

My 14 year old wears baggy oversized jeans. He usually sizes up and wears a belt. He has them from Urban Outfitters and Carharrt ones from a vintage store.

AlphabetBird · 05/01/2025 14:58

Skate brands are the way to go - have a look on Route One. DS16 is into Butter, Polar, Carharrt and vintage Levi’s (his dad’s from the late 90’s!).

MajorCarolDanvers · 05/01/2025 14:59

He hates them. Wears joggers.

YoYoFlo · 05/01/2025 15:05

DS17 always gets his from Zara - great fit for him (he's tall & slim) and he can try them on in-store as sizes and styles vary.

And it's definitely loose/ baggy fit for jeans and joggers these days! He looks like something from the 1990s Grin
