Looking young for years

Do you think someone who has always looked young for their years will always (discounting serious illness) look young for their years? Or can it suddenly flip

SpongeBlobSquareFace · 04/01/2025 15:27

It flips!
I looked young for years and years then at 53 everyone stopped saying I looked young for my age
It's devastating!!!!

orangewasp · 04/01/2025 15:30

It can flip. Mid 50s for me. It's quite a shock telling people my age and them accepting it without question.

Discobooloo · 04/01/2025 15:39

Apparently at some point between 40-60 it flips with everyone. Could be unlucky and it be 40 or lucky and it be 60.

I'm 46 and still look young so I'm dreading it!

Shetlands · 04/01/2025 15:48

I'd always liked it when people thought I was younger but the inevitable happened in my 60s and I didn't enjoy it! I was queuing to pay at a self-service cafe and the assistant gave me the over 60s discount they were running that day without asking my age. I was so deflated!

I don't care now (in my 70s) how old people think I am. I was chatting to an unknown woman in a railway station last year and I mentioned my mother. The woman said incredulously, "Your mother is still living?" 😂

SpongeBlobSquareFace · 04/01/2025 15:49

People used to exclaim when I said my age now they nod and it's like a knife to the heart
When I wore a face mask the nurse when I went for bloods said I couldn't possibly be my age and another time I was wearing a face mask and I asked a pharmacist for menopause advice and she said I looked too young for that so I can deduce its the lower part of my face that gives the game away 😷

It can flip on some people. It depends on genes, sun damage etc.
My mum has always looked young for her age, and so far I ain't doing too badly apparently lol 😆

newyear25 · 04/01/2025 16:56

My ex was young looking in his teens and 20s but now in his 40s looks a lot older

Checkedpajamas · 04/01/2025 16:58

It's horrible when no one bats an eyelid at your age

Crikeyalmighty · 04/01/2025 17:05

My face kind of flipped at around 57- I'm still told I look younger but I think it's my general overall 'look'and hair etc - I suddenly developed virtually overnight those 2 line furrows between eyes at top of nose and crossway lines across top of nose too and a slight droop on one eye that I never notice but can see it on photos- yep it's not depressing- but I think of the mantra that there are plenty who sadly don't make 63

henlake7 · 04/01/2025 17:08

Can go the other way though...my mother always looked middle aged but at about 50 I realiesed she wasnt looking any older! Now late 70s and has swung from looking old for her age to looking young!

OneOliveEagle · 04/01/2025 17:11

I think a lot of it is genetic. A lot of the women in my family have large eyes, full lips, oily/combo skin, round faces and hourglass figures. Most happy with how they look well into their 50s, but once they hit their 60s they start dropping weight (without wanting to) and then their faces start heading south.

I’m totally getting a face-lift. I’ll not go down without a fight 😂

Willowkins · 04/01/2025 17:15

I remember being 24 and some older woman on a train asking if I was okay to be travelling on my own. She thought I was 14! I'm still getting it at 64 (the nice lady at the till asked me if I was aware the bonus card was only for over 60s) but the clock is ticking.

strangeandfamiliar · 04/01/2025 17:18

Having been an older-looking 14 year old who had no trouble getting served in pubs, I didn't change all that much for the next 40 years or so. Then it flipped at 52/3 - right up until then people were genuinely staggered when I told them my age. Now I just get a nod. It's fine though - I tend to get great service everywhere these days, which I think comes with the confidence boost you get in your 50s. I don't care nearly as much about what people think any more!

Same here! I remember feeling very smug around 45 when someone asked me my age on my birthday week, and I could see they were surprised. Now (58) people guess my age accurately/ a couple of years older 😭. The menopause, kids, dealing with elderly parent illness and bereavement have taken their toll.

SleepyHippy3 · 04/01/2025 17:23

There’s nothing wrong with looking your age, what ever that age is. A person can look amazing, and be healthy at any age. Why are we women conditioned to believe that looking younger is much better, instead of being whole heartedly encouraged to embrace any age we are. Surely, if you are 60, for example, why would you want to look like a 35 year old? Isn’t that just a bit weird. And some one telling women that „”you look good for your age”, is absolutely not a compliment because it’s doesn’t acknowledge the person you are right now, in yourself. Taking care of your self and looking good is absolutely not the same as trying to look youthful, which is a complete con itself. It’s such nonsense that women have this continuous never ending pressure to have to keep up with messed up beauty ideals and expectations.

I'm 44 and look fairly young for my age. People are always shocked when they hear my age (or hear how old my children are)

I think it's set to change soon though, the grey hairs are starting to appear!

AllTheChaos · 04/01/2025 17:26

Ahhh mid 40s I flipped from looking young for my age to much older than I am. It was hard to get used too, I’ll admit!!

Just starting to get grey hairs at 44 is very lucky indeed. It was early 30s for me!

NattyFish · 04/01/2025 17:29

I've never looked young for my age. Getting served in pubs at 13. People have thought I'm in my 40s since my mid-twenties.

But - my mum was the same, looked mature up until her 40s - then seemed to get stuck and just didn't age for the next 30 years! I'm hoping my face does the same...

Noflukeforthenuke · 04/01/2025 17:31

to make all the oldies feel better, I think that you reach an age in your mid 50’s where people are terrified to discuss your age in case of offence. It’s obvious you are an older person. This, coupled with the fact that many young people think anyone over 40 is ancient means they don’t think it’s a compliment to say you look 45 or even 50 ( when you’re 60). To them, it’s all just ‘old’.

i see lots of fantastic looking 60 year olds but saying they look 50 doesn’t sound like a compliment to a 25 year old.

also, I think a lot of the people who look young for their age are people who dress younger, are more engaged with popular culture, or exercise regularly

ZaZathecat · 04/01/2025 17:34

Flipped at around 60 for me, probably once menopause was well and truly done. I don't look bad ('for my age') but at 57 people's jaws dropped when they found out. No-one bats an eyelid now

Crushed23 · 04/01/2025 17:34

Totally agree with this. It's hard to believe Jo Whiley is 60, but it's not because of her face (although her face looks great). It's the whole package, so to speak.

doublec · 04/01/2025 17:37

Am quite literally waiting for this to flip. For the majority of my 40s, I have always looked much younger than my age. However, in my late 40s, had cancer and post-chemo, I feel like I've aged a decade if not more overnight 😔

RichPetunia · 04/01/2025 17:39

I only have two words -
•Cliff
•Richard
🤣

MsCactus · 04/01/2025 17:44

My family all look young, they also die really late/old (well, the woman do).

My great granny always looked young for her age - but by over 100 she looked in her 80s which to most people is still "old" so I think the "wow you look so young effect" probably dies down a bit. Looking 20 when you're 40 will get a lot of comments - but looking 80 when you're 100 won't as much
