The perfect first suit for work?

RubyDarke · 02/01/2025 21:53

Where can I find a suit for my DD that meets the following requirements:

appropriate for work in a relaxed /creative environment (i.e. not banking or law or similar)
single breasted jacket
trousers - not ankle grazers
a colour (not black or grey and not pastel)
to fit 5’11” size 8-10 slim /athletic build
She looks great in straight cut trousers eg Levi 501s

Re budget we would be looking at the ‘nicer’ end of the high street as she is early 20s about to embark on post-uni career after living in jeans while a student.

I haven’t bought work clothes of this type in 30 years so am hoping someone can help us!

If she wants to wear a suit that's fine but it's generally not expected even in law or banking.

You've ruled out black, grey and pastels which unfortunately rules out a bargain in Max Mara, but here it is anyway

This is probably what you're after but probably way over budget.

Here's Max Mara sale

There's Me +Em

And Cos is cheaper

Hobbs, Whistles, Jigsaw and Reiss all have similar. There's also The Fold which is much loved on here but I think is dull. Cos is probably the best option.

It’s very unusual to wear a suit at work these days - what field is she working in? In the creative industries it’s essentially unheard of and could mean she gives the wrong impression.

I agree with knitfast, what's her role and what kind of company, small, large corporate etc

Early 20's creative for me a suit would be OTT unless that is their style in general

I agree with you and PP that very few jobs demand a suit. Wearing a suit can be her style if she makes it her style but it needs to be a concious decision that's the look she's going for.

This is a relaxed / creative work environment, @RubyDarke:

Highly entertaining - but also useful on clothes!

Reiss would be ideal. I am 5'11" and recently bought this suit there, which is gorgeous and fits all your requirements: www.reiss.com/style/su322227/q60904

The trousers were not quite long enough, but I took them to a tailor to be let down and they are decent quality so had enough in the hem to do it (cheap brands save money in the hems!).

I bought the slim leg trousers, not the wide legs in that picture.

Thanks will look at Reiss

At that height/ build she'll look great in masculine tailoring, would she consider looking in vintage, charity or secondhand designer boutiques? I've got a few men's blazers and a cracking three piece suit that way. The slightly slouchy, oversized look stops the suit looking too formal/ stuffy/ old fashioned.

RubyDarke · 03/01/2025 14:06

Thanks everyone for the advice and comments. For various reasons I will not bore you with she does want one suit and it is in keeping with her work plans.

She will wear a suit the first day then from there on in she will be in her jeans and trainers. I really wouldn't bother.

How can you be so confident about this without knowing her personal style? There are some really effortless, relaxed ways to wear suits.

I'm always impressed with how many MNetters, instead of making sensible suggestions, tell the OP that they're wrong!

ApolloandDaphne · 03/01/2025 15:31

@Wallacewhite Because I have 2 DDs who went into creative type jobs after graduation and bought new smart clothes for starting. Neither of them wore those clothes after the first week.

It's a bit depressing that people who "who went into creative type jobs" can only come up with wearing jeans and trainers as their personal style.

As Wallacewhite says there are lots of ways to wear a suit.

But your two DD aren't the whole of the creative industry.

Many people wear suits in a casual way with sneakers for example

Agreed. The Cos suits are miles away from the traditional work suit - the second one is almost cosplay for dress me like an avant garde architect !

ApolloandDaphne · 03/01/2025 15:56

I realise this. I'm offering a point of view. I don't want OP and her DD to waste money. But they can buy a suit if they want to.
