What to wear at Disneyworld?

Twilightstarbright · 02/01/2025 13:45

As the title suggests, I have 10 days at WDW in April. I’ve lost a lot of weight and have no summer clothes! My wardrobe right now consists of smart dresses and blazers for work, gym gear and jeans with a fine knit jumper for the weekend. What should I wear in Disney? Will I get chafing???

I think I’ll be a size 8 or thereabouts by then, and I’m short. Not particularly interested in dressing in Disney stuff, just comfortable- assume denim shorts are t a good idea on water rides???

We went last Easter. If you are rope dropping (ie getting there early to be one of the first in the park) then you will need a jumper or light jacket as the mornings can be very chilly before the sun comes up.

Otherwise, t-shirts, shorts, summer dresses are all you need. Yes you’ll need good trainers - I wore my running shoes every day. You do walk a lot but to be honest the most I did in any one day was 27,000 steps and it was normally around the 20,000 mark which is a normal day for me! I think most of the “so much walking” warnings are aimed at Americans who just aren’t used to walking as much as us Brits!

Forgot to mention swimwear!
And a cover-up and flip flops/slides for going room to pool.

Someone mentioned laundry above. Disney resorts have laundries and are often situated near a pool. Download the app before you go. Once you find an outfit that works you'll probably want to wash and rewear it.

The comment saying everyone looks awful is hilarious :D we went for the first time last year, i wore strappy summer dresses for the most part, and denim shorts and t shirts. I made an error on day 1 and wore the wrong shoes... Crocs are the only way for me now 😁some may refer to them as monstrosities however when your feet are burning in pain you wont care. socks and crocs for the win.

Why socks with the crocs tho? This bit I don't follow. We are going a lap in April and trying to get my head around it!

Rocksaltrita · 02/01/2025 20:33

Shorts, t-shirts, Sketchers.

Biroclicker · 02/01/2025 20:37

I always make sure I wear cotton and always have shoulders and chest covered purely because it means you're less worried about constantly reapplying suncream to those areas.

Shorts with zip pockets can be handy for rides where bags aren't allowed.

RoGlendaleMcDu · 02/01/2025 20:39

I agree about watching some videos, Brogan Tate is a good one for a UK based person. April is sometimes chilly in the mornings and evenings, so a cardian you can shove into a bag is good. Lots of the youtube videos show people taking bags on rides. I take a messenger style bag, even on Rock n Roller coaster that goes upside down you can shove the bag down by your feet.

I wear a baseball hat so my pony tail goes through the gap at the back. We have been in April, May and August, we like August best and it is when we usually go but I need my hair tied up and off my neck. The baseball cap clips onto my bag with a carabiner. I wear shorts and vest tops or short sleeved tops so a little more stylish than t shirts but honestly, it is about comfort, you will sweat because of the humidity too. I wear Skechers both trainers and sandals.

Swimming wise we always wear swim shoes especially as Typhoon Lagoon has a rough floor for grip as that tidal wave is vicious in an awesome way. I also wear board shorts and a rash vest with a bikini top underneath as we enjoy the waterslides.

I agree that 20,000 steps is normal if not on the conservative side. Magic Kingdom is 42 square miles. People staying off site tend to stay in the park for longer than those onsite who can get back to their hotel easily and go back into the park later on.

Here is the historic data for weather so you can see highs, lows and averages and work out if you will feel cold or not.

No denim! Far too hot & sweaty and you won't dry from the water rides.

Wear the comfiest trainers you have. Cotton/linen shorts & t shirts. A thin rain jacket as it rains a lot!!

happy2025 · 02/01/2025 21:02

If you've lost a lot of weight then please be careful about food at wdw. I did similar and found it impossible to find food at the parks that was not deep fried. It was hell. I ended up putting on weight sadly. Best to have a heavy breakfast and pack some healthy food if you can for the day.

snowlady4 · 02/01/2025 21:07

Sports wear is the best in my opinion. Cools you down. Drys easily. Comfortable. Some nice bits available. I got a couple of tennis type skirts with built in shorts from lulu lemon which are great for the parks.
Comfy footwear.
Throwaway/fold up poncho if the weather requires it!
A hat that you can fold up or shove in your waistband- like a bucket hat/baseball cap rather than a sun hat. Even a badanna.
Forget about wasting your money on character tee shirts in asda or primark- the material is too thick if it's hot (I haven't been in April but have been at the start of may so must be similar.)
Bumbag is ideal.
You honestly won't care too much how you look- everyone is in the same boat- sweating but having so much FUN!
You will have a ball!
I'm going again in May and am so excited.. I've started looking for a few bits on vinted!

foodtoorder · 02/01/2025 21:43

Shorts, comfiest trainers/foot wear and some sort of Disney tee shirt or similar top and Disney ears are standard dress code for every one regardless of weight.

CarefulN0w · 02/01/2025 22:02

Don't worry about being stylish - you're there to have fun.

Do be prepared for rain storms. You can either embrace a plastic poncho or find something of your choice.

Other than that t shirts, shorts or shock horror 3/4 length chinos and comfy trainers or Birkenstocks.

Biroclicker · 02/01/2025 22:17

I wouldn't worry too much about weight gain. If you stick to water rather than lots of fizzy drinks in the day and don't drink too much alcohol the walking burns off a lot. I tend to come back lighter despite eating my weight in upf.

Twilightstarbright · 03/01/2025 08:51

Thanks everyone!

I’m not too worried about gaining weight, most likely will have breakfast in our apartment and a protein shake at lunch.

I’ll start hunting for shorts. I never wear shorts or trousers so this feels very different for me!

Something extremely comfortable - leggings, cropped leggings and a light top. We went in March last year - unfortunately you're going during one of the busiest times - right in the middle of spring break and easter - same as us. The crowds and queues will be a challenge. Plan your days well and get there as early as possible.

Pl242 · 03/01/2025 09:02

Have been at this time of year. My uniform was shorts (I like light cotton type, just above knee), regular scoop neck t shirts, cap and sunnies, running trainers and decent socks, and a light layer for early mornings and evenings. I have found Uniqlo airism a useful layer in this weather. a poncho useful for storms too but you can buy ones there.

BuntyCollocks · 03/01/2025 09:07

You definitely walk more than during a day shopping. We average usually about 13 miles plus a day - I definitely don’t usually do that.

we were there in April and it was a chilly start in the mornings getting up to around 22 ish in the afternoons. I had shorts and tops, summer dresses and a jumper to throw on in the morning.

you don’t have to look awful. Might be blowing my own trumpet but I don’t and nor do my family. Comfy shoes 100% a must. Take a couple of pairs to rotate and definitely no denim when you’re doing a water ride.

roses2 · 03/01/2025 09:14

I went in May last year when it was hotter than the sun. Disneyworld Florida has little shade - queues are mostly outside in the sun - and luckily I had a hat and dresses that covered my shoulders. There aren't that many water rides and given its so hot you'll be fine, only thing that didn't dry quickly was our trainers.

Twilightstarbright · 03/01/2025 09:27

@Frostythesnowman1 how do I plan? I feel
a bit silly asking. I’m in several WDW Facebook groups but am still none the wiser!

OP posts:
Mumof1andacat · 03/01/2025 09:44

Basic and practical. Shorts, tops and leggings. A couple of light cardigans or hoodys. Footwear, trainers that's can withstand walking. The sketchers style of sandle is popular.

prkchhgfp · 03/01/2025 10:00

I ended up putting on weight sadly.

Given the sheer level of walking and the heat I'm amazed someone could put weight on in WDW, even with the calorific food!

ok what tickets have you got?

When we went last year it was the genie+ app that you had to use but I'm not sure if that's still being used. Are you prepared to pay more to have a shorter queue?

Genie Plus is now called Lightning Lane Multi pass - you can purchase them and then I think it is about 7am you can book in your rides at certain times that you want to go on. You have to be quite organised. When we were there last year the queues were quite bad unless you had a lightning lane pass.

Get yourself on some disney facebook groups, there are so many experts on there that will be able to help you more. Are you staying at a disney resort? If so this will allow you access to the parks 30 minutes before non disney resort guests

Also, a lot of people go first thing in the morning, go back to the hotel for a few hours and then go back to the parks in the evening. If you are staying on a non disney resort and plan to drive to the parks, there is a $30 per day charge to park, but this covers all disney resorts - so if you went to magic kingdom in the morning but animal kingdom in the afternoon of the same day, that $30 dollar parking charge covers all disney parks

Genie+ Is Now Called Lightning Lane Multi Pass - NerdWallet

Disney is renaming its line-skipping services to Lightning Lane Multi Pass and Lightning Lane Single Pass. The change also enhances the service at Disney World.

You're going in April are you haven't done the planning yet....? I had nightmares that I had done that in the run up to our Florida holiday!

BruisedNeckMeat · 03/01/2025 10:34

This is good advice from @Frostythesnowman1 but the system has changed again recently so that you now book your lightening lanes either 7 or 3 days in advance depending on whether you are staying on or off property. This makes it much harder to secure a lightening lane last minute so advance planning is vital, especially during spring break.

Get on YouTube and watch as many Disney planning videos as you can.

Twilightstarbright · 03/01/2025 11:39

@prkchhgfp well I only booked on the 30th Dec so when should I have started planning?? That’s why I’m asking questions now.
