as title, I brought a phase eight dress in john lewis in June last year, it was for new years eve, brought early as it was reduced, first time of wearing a stud came off, it looks like they are glued on , I can't find the stud and it's noticeable, so can I return, my worry is even time I wear it, another one could come off, it wasn't cheap and haven't even worn it, what would do.

when I said wearing I meant I was just getting ready, I hadn't left the house.

I can’t see the taking it back - there is absolutely no evidence you didn’t catch the stud on something rather than it being a fault.

Rocknrollstar · 02/01/2025 11:50

Years ago they would have been able to send it back for you to have another stud added. Maybe you could find something suitable?

StarlightLady · 02/01/2025 11:53

Email them with the facts and politely ask what they suggest. Maybe you will get a positive response, maybe not. But John Lewis customer service do respond promptly and unless you buy a raffle ticket..

Can you show a picture of what has come off, it might be something you can replace ( + have spares for the next time) I would be surprised if they would do anything about it, as they may not see a detail coming off as a fault.

Took it back today, where the stud was glued on it left the fabric thin, like nearly a hole, I got a refund. She could see it was new and not worn,

Amazing, that's good, most shops now are really poor for customer service

NotMeForBakeoff · 02/01/2025 16:21

In my experience, John Lewis are hopeless with issues like this, but good luck.

Randomontheinternet25 · 02/01/2025 16:30

@NotMeForBakeoff the op updated and got a refund

AmberOrca · 02/01/2025 16:59

Wow - frankly amazed they’ve given a refund after 6 months.

Honestly most people assume that they're not going to get a positive result in situations like this and so don't even try. Going in polite, confident and firm is crucial in my experience. I've had to argue - again, politely, confidently and firmly - for refunds for a dashcam that stopped working after about three months of use from Argos and for an electric train set, also from Argos, that didn't work the first time I took it out of the box, that was within a few days but I'd lost the receipt, and the employee didn't want to believe I could use my bank statement on my phone as proof of purchase even with a sign saying I could behind him. I got a refund last year for a pair of boots purchased from TK MAXX and well-worn for six months, they started to let in water after the bit of metal in the sole wore a hole through the bottom in exactly the same place on both shoes, they had to call the manager over but I sucessfully argued (and with no push-back, surprisingly!) that a £100 pair of boots is expected to last for longer than 6 months.

That's really food, I'm actually happy for you!

That's good and very different to my experience with them. I've vowed never to buy anything important from John Lewis again. In the past they had a reputation of quality and were 'safe' to buy from with good customer care.
