Makeup from scratch need serious help please

Need help!

I need to start a new makeup bag from scratch, as I am recently recovered from illness and haven't been out much over the last year, all my makeup is out of date/congealed. Back to work soon and looking for a complete overhaul starting with good quality basics.

Can someone help me with a list of things I'll need? I'm 32, dry skin, and prefer not to be too glam in the day but do need to look well at work (lawyer, at court/ with clients a lot so not much time for touch ups during the day).

The only department store near me is Frasers and I'd prefer to shop in person rather than online as I'm out of touch and need help.

So far on my list is
primer
foundation- I have one that's okay but I don't love but can stick with for now
brow liner
Mascara
blush? highlighter? I don't even know
lip sticks- would love recommendations for something long lasting
I don't really know what else.

I have about 150 pounds to spend for the basics and then can add to it as I go along.

I also wondered about doing a makeup lesson at a counter and letting them sell me a look but I'm nervous to commit to a brand! what would be a good brand to consider?

Thank you for your help, as you can probably tell I'm a bit overwhelmed!

Similar skin but older but don't go for a heavy look either.
I like:
Erborian CC cream
Revlon concealer
Benefit benefit blush
Rimmel bronzer if needed
Clarins lip oil for colour or Boots chubby stick
Revlon eyeliner and eyebrow pencils
Mascara
No 7 do eyeshadow if you want that too.
You'll have plenty of change left for a good moisturiser to prep the skin beforehand, almond oil at night.

You'll get most of that in Boots, you'll need your department store probably for Erborian and Clarins. Charlotte Tilbury setting spray good too.

I also like the look of the Bobbi Brown Jones road kit for a dewy look with lovely cheeks and lips.
Re lesson, ayu on instagram does great, basic lessons. Enjoy and best of luck!

Lessons on YouTube are great. Pampered Wolf, Charlotte Holcroft, Caroline Barnes are three of my faves (all a bit older than you, as I am, but there will be many others). I too favour Erborian CC cream, it’s flippin ace. I like Lancôme concealer or this Huda Beauty one. Sooo many great mascaras out there. My fave is Charlotte Tilbury Push Up Lashes. I currently use the Hourglass Dragon palette for blush, highlighter and powder - it’s quite pricy but delicious!

For long wearing:
No7 instant illusions primer is good
Estée Lauder double wear foundation or it cosmetics cc cream when you want to go a bit more light coverage.
Concealer, I think L'Oréal will have a half decent one, I don't personally chuck too much money at concealer.
Powder I can only recommend pressed but a good translucent is Laura mercier or Mac.
Nars for bronzer and blush and setting spray
Natasha denona / urban decay for eyeshadow palettes
Nars, Chanel and MAC all do well for lipsticks
Highlight I find ciate good but I would say for this the key is just to find one you like.
I do always go back to benefit for mascara and fan fest or roller lash is good, curl the lashes first obviously that makes all the difference

Brow I find NYX Professional Makeup Precision Brow Pencil The best and always go back to it, very affordable

If you are concealing under eye dark circles consider a colour corrector. I use MAC colour corrector.

If you’re like me you’re probably reading these replies and feeling even more overwhelmed! Perhaps it would be an idea to go to a counter like Estee Lauder and say you know you want a primer and foundation and probably a blusher and ask her to recommend and try them on you and then just buy those for now. You could ask her to suggest a lipgloss/lipstick colour to buy at a later date then go for a wander round Boots and look for a similar colour to save money with a cheaper brand?

Once you've got an idea of what you want, might be worth having a peek on ASOS: they have a post-Christmas sale on.

Do you have a boots nearby? You can book a make up lesson and they'll go through stuff with you. I found it so useful and it's free!!

I've had my makeup done at my local MAC shop with good results. Not keen on their foundation but their makeup is generally decent.

I'm tried loads of brands over the years but I've settled on the following:

  • Charlotte tilbury beautiful skin foundation
  • Nars radiant concealer
  • Nars blush - orgasm/deep throat
  • Elf liquid liner in black
  • Kiko eye pencils - use these for my brows too
  • Elf halo glow as a highlighter
  • Urban decay Naked eyeshadow palette
  • UK lash mascara - discovered this by accident when it came free with their serum but it's great.

Yes a little overwhelmed! Still feel a little lost but it's a great start to research the mentioned products and do some price checking.
