Wool coat or blended wool coat?

I’m on the hunt for a long, oversized wool coat. I’ve seen one I kind of like but it’s 50% wool and 50% polyester. So I immediately thought no. But then Google suggests a blended coat can be more durable and also lighter.

Is there a benefit to a blended coat over a pure wool one? I always avoid polyester dresses and tops. I assume a pure wool coat is warmer?

To me, a wool coat is an investment to keep you really warm but still be breathable and should last you a lifetime.

There isn't anything positive about polyester except the coat will be half the price.

50% is a lot better than the 'wool' coat I spotted in M&S though that was 100% man made but it certainly wasn't priced with that in mind.

Thank you. I’ll keep looking, so hard to know what to get. Yes, the 100% wool ones are a lot of money and fashions change. I don’t want to spend £500 on a coat I Don’t like in two years time.

I prefer 100% wool if possible but I think wool blend with a higher wool content (say 70-80%) is OK but not with polyester - viscose/rayon would keep it breathable. You can get decent quality wool coats (even 100%) at the higher end high street shops, especially with the sales still going - Cos, Arket, & Other Stories, Hobbs etc.

The only way to tell is to go feel the fabric as it's more a case-by-case basis rather than yes/no answer.

Where possible, I try only to buy natural fibres. I have a double-faced wool coat - 70% wool 30% cashmere from Joseph and another from Zara - 44% wool, 33% polyester, 23% viscose. They both look the same, feel the same, and keep me as warm as each other. If you didn't know which was which, you'd not be able to differentiate. If anything, I think the Zara has worn better as it hasn't been nibbled by moths and although worn more than the Joseph one, still looks brand new with no discernible bobbling or wear to the fabric.

Thanks, I think I’m going to head to the shops at the weekend as I’m getting nowhere looking online. Like you say the feel of it might help. Plus I’m short so sleeve length is a consideration, though guess I can get sleeves altered if necessary

I have two long all-wool coats that I bought used, from 'vintage' brands. They cost very little and are timeless but seriously warm, so I actually end up wearing them less that I'd like!

Lovely quality though so I'd recommend - if you don't mind second hand.

Next have a black petite wool/polyester blend oversized blazer coat in the sale.
I've just bought one and really like it. It's quite thin but the shape is nice. Doesn't look too shapeless or boxy.
