Comfortable bras that don't chaff armpits

Pastryapronsucks · 30/12/2024 23:57

I have tried so.many brands and been professionaly fitted many times, but I struggle to find a bra that doesn't chafe the front of my armpit, where your pecs join your arms/shoulders. The skin has become discoloured from years of rubbing.

I am quite small framed with a large cup varying twixt 32/34 FF/G.

Any one have any suggestions? I don't care if wired or non wired, doesn't have to look sexy, just hold them in place comfortably.

I have these

I'm also a 32G and these are so comfy and supportive! I only discovered them last year but am slowly replacing all my old bras with them. I honestly can't recommend them enough!

I'm 36F-G and have the same issue: most bras dig in or chafe somewhere from the outer top of the underwire to the point at which the strap attaches to the cup. It usually feels like the outside of cup is cut too wide at the top.

For the last few years I have only worn the Bravissimo Satine bra. I go for a fitting, try on a million bras, and come out with more Satines. This model is the only one that does not shred me. (And meets my sensory need for nothing scratchy at all.)

Strapless underwire bras do not cause this problem. Unfortunately I struggle with them if I am overweight, as they then dig in under the armpit.

The ultimate extension of a strapless bra is a corset. A well-made, well-fitted one is astonishingly comfortable. But vastly more expensive, and vastly more high-maintenance. A bustier might be a good compromise between strapless and corset, but I've never worn one, so can't comment.

I love Molke bras. Sexy they are not but never worn anything so supportive and comfortable. I'm a 32GG so really need them lifted!

The M&S one linked above is good too but I find the Molke a bit more supportive.

doodleschnoodle · 31/12/2024 00:50

Oh and it's a bit undignified putting it on as you have to sort of scoop your boob into the cup. But once they're in there they're snug as two bugs in a rug!

TrtseHkpr · 31/12/2024 01:02

Shapermint are very good, lightly padded but no underwires, very soft and comfortable to wear and give a nice shape

Pastryapronsucks · 31/12/2024 10:45

Thanks for the suggestions, lots to go on.

@Aparecium the problem area is exactly this, I can't tolerate anscotch lace either.

@TrtseHkpr will have a look at shapermint. I have tried lots of the 'stretch' bras advertised on social media, but they tend to be too loose round the middle or cause mono boob.

@doodleschnoodle have been toying with Molke. I love the fun designs.

@Ophy83 will have a look at triangular bras, the molke ones are triangle so may work for you too.

@whoami24601 Good price for the M&S too!

I have this problem too. It seems as soon as the cup size goes above a C the band then becomes three times as thick, and there's suddenly extra bits of material added to the arm pit area of the cup. Like something built by Fred Dibnah.

Absolutely infuriating, when you've got this industrial standard 32DD and next to it is a perfectly normal 38B which is the same bloody size cup so there's obviously no need for it at all!

I've considered buying the big band size and shortening the band myself but I'm really not very good at sewing and not sure I could pull it off.

GreyBlackBay · 31/12/2024 11:17

I'm the same, 32ff/g with no meat on my ribcage. If the wire doesn't stick in somewhere the band digs in or the shoulders hurt.

I've tried various wireless bravissimo and they seemed comfortable and supportive but then I realised the shoulder strap seam was right at the top and really dug in. Then the bands started to crinkle up after a few washes, I wonder if they lose their integrity a bit? I haven't tried the triangle one above though.

I tried the M&S flexi fit. Thought I'd cracked it and bought 4 but same issue, they start digging in at the side of the band.

I tried molke and the other similar one but they were all pull ons. Seemed comfy but I really struggle with a pull on and I simply can't see how the band can expand to fit over my hips or bust then be supportive enough once in the correct place which must be 10 inches smaller? If you try them I'd really like to know what you think. I was slightly wary because the pics are mainly larger ladies who will have different fitting issues to me.

I dont understand why there isn't a wired bra with some level of padding under and around the wire. I bought those cotton sweat band things and wore those under when I was really struggling. I've also put pieces of sheepskin (buy some pure sheepskin backless insoles and cut them up) where the wire digs in - this is bliss bug it tends to work loose and appear somewhere.

Aparecium · 31/12/2024 12:41

Nursing bras are often more comfortable. I have a couple for hot days when I can't bear wires but also can't face taking someone's eye out if I turn around too fast. I haven't tried any wired ones.

Years ago I had bras where the wires ended near the band. They shaped and supported from the centre to the side, but did not come up under the arms. IIRC the structure of the cup in the outside was like a supportive sling. Wonderfully comfortable.

eyestosee · 31/12/2024 12:48

It is for this reason I have a sizeable stock of bra extenders. If the underband digs into flesh at all it will potentially degrade the skin. What I also recommend is studying the pictures of the model wearing the bras, look out for no pinching or overhang - great if they use older members of the public to model who might not have such firm skin as fashion models. Other than that lots of firming exercises (lots on YouTube) for the supporting muscles and getting rid of any excess weight if you have any.

Bigpinkslippers · 31/12/2024 13:02

I'm 36g and only 5' tall so find bras sit right up to my armpit which means constantly getting poked by uderwires
For the past few years ive moved onto snag or shapermint and found them far more comfortable.
Snag are my favourite

SpikeGilesSandwich · 31/12/2024 16:45

I invested in some Shapermint bras and am impressed so far. So relaxing not to have wires poking in!

Doggymummar · 31/12/2024 19:05

34 HH here I find Boody and Lemonade to be very good, also sugar candy

itsnotmeitsu · 31/12/2024 21:50

I wear camisoles that have a seam under the bust and stick a bra pad in there. I haven't been wanting to cope with actual bras since I went for a long time without bras during covid lock-downs.

Isabelle70 · 01/01/2025 11:30

If you are small framed are you a 32/34? I am a size 14 and wear a 32h.
If you are say a size 10 your back size is most likely a 28 or 30.

FlatWhiteOrLatte · 01/01/2025 15:16

Boody are very comfortable, the t-shirt or full bust bra will be more supportive.

I used to wear a 30 but found it dug in my back

I went back to 32 and I'm a 10/12

I also have this issue, can't get along with the soft non underwired bras at all, have tried Molke and others, they all give a mono boob effect. I want the girls to be perky and separated not smooshed together. I have tried all combinations of cup size and band size and still can't get it right. I do have big boobs - so envious of people who can just waltz into M&S and buy an off the shelf bra.
