Hi all

thinking of getting this

main concern is that my hair grows fast! So am i stuck with regular expensive top ups?

also i dye my hair once a month for roots. Will that take okay on the treatment?

also will my curls fall out completely? I want it to stop the frizzy look. I can cope without curls I suppose but it's t seem a shame

finally do I have to use sulfate free products? I tried them before and don't don't like them

thank you

yes you will need to use sulfate free and NaCl free products
yes it will make your hair generally flatter- gets rid of some of my natural wave as well as frizz
Dye before treatment is usually recommended. If you dye after you do lose some of the effects of the treatment

RoundandSad · 28/12/2024 21:10

Thank you

how long does the effect last please?

@Breadcat24 how do you apply it and do you have to do anything to keep the hair first?

Breadcat24 · 29/12/2024 14:55

You wash the hair in a shampoo that strips any residual conditioner off the hair shaft- a clarifying shampoo ideally something like Monday or Paul Mitchel- but you can also use baby shampoo (or I have anyway)
comb it and carefully dry so as not to tangle up- point hairdryer down root to tip.
Comb through the keratin treatment and dry carefully (I have to do this in stages as even with the non formaldehyde stuff the fumes are fierce)
When completely dry section and pass hair straighteners through each section at full heat 5 times. This is where it helps if someone does the back for you
You are not supposed to wash it or tie it up for a couple of days, but you can definitely tidy the style up after sleeping with straighteners.
wash with non sulphate or NaCl shampoo- there are lots now like organiX condition as normal
You can buy kits if not confident on your product choice
Costs me £175 if I have this in hairdresser and £35 to do at home. Does take an evening though

teacoffeeorpassthegin · 29/12/2024 15:43

I have mine done at the hair dresser and it costs me £110 but that is without a cut or colour.

I may give this a go!!!
Thanks

I use choccococo. It's brilliant and much cheaper than the salon. Easy enough to apply. Just time consuming.

Rina66 · 29/12/2024 16:01

I use this one too and do it myself, it means I can focus more on my harder to style areas and pick a day like a Tuesday to do it, so I have bad hair mid week whilst it's curing! It took too long in the salon and was far too flat.

Back21970 · 29/12/2024 16:07

I’ve did it myself several times, not as good as the hairdressers but for the cost I can’t really complain.

There’s one on Amazon called Nutree Amazonliss that’s been getting great reviews, I might try that next.

I use it about a week after my colour, takes a few hours but my hair definitely behaves better for a month or two.

RoundandSad · 29/12/2024 19:37

Thanks all

it you have to use clarifying shampoo first then doesn't that strip out dye?

I'd go to a hairdresser i think, at least the first time.

is it stopping frizz on a rainy day etc? I see lots of women with amazing hair, am just assuming it's this. Things like frizz ease don't work on me

Makes hair easier to manage but with my hair which is really frizzy it doesn't mean I can wash and go as it still looks hideous!!

interesting

the whole point for me is that I thought I could wash and go without doing a lot to get rid of frizz

work is going to be completely mad next year so I thought this would save time in the morning.

How long before having the Keratin treatment should you get colour done please ?

thehousewiththesagegreensofa · 30/12/2024 16:49

I first started having this done about two years ago and it has been life changing. As others have said, I still blow dry it but, once it is dried (and a fairly rough dry is sufficient), that is it. It looks like that for the rest of the day regardless of the weather. I used to leave the house looking normal, get to work looking a bit windswept having walking two minutes from the car park to my office and just look more and more dragged-through-a-hedge-backwards as the day went on.
Since I first had keratin, I can wear my hair longer which I love as then I can tie it up. Previously, I didn't wear it long as it just exploded too much and go so knotted. I've realised that, if I rough dry it, double it up in a pony tail or messy bun and keep it like that for an hour or so whilst I'm getting ready and travelling to work, that gives it volume and a bit of a wave.

RoundandSad · 30/12/2024 17:00

@thehousewiththesagegreensofa thank you this is the information I was looking for.

I have been reading up on the difference between Brazilian blow dry and keratin blow dry. I'm still quite confused but it looks like keratin can be adjusted so so they can alter the treatment so they're not knocking out my curls.

I can actually pop to a hairdresser tomorrow and make enquiries, but as it's New Year's Eve, I imagine they'll be very busy. Or has everyone had their hair done for their night out by then? 😂

I am still wondering about colour because it looks as if they do a couple of washes with clarifying shampoo and that generally removes colour doesn't it? That's what I do when my colour goes wrong!

If I could just dry my hair and if it would look the same regardless of weather, I would be ever so pleased.

You can do the keratin and colour on the same day if you want to. Keratin treatment will lighten colour and if you have your hair dyed blonde it will look quite brassy. Alternatively have the Keratin done and colour a few days later.

doodleygirl · 30/12/2024 20:28

I have mine done, then the colour following week

thehousewiththesagegreensofa · 30/12/2024 21:16

I have my colour done separately. Originally I did this because the hairdresser I have gone to for years for cut & colour doesn't do keratin and I didn't want to stop using him. That still applies but I also couldn't cope with being at the hairdresser for long enough to have cut, colour & keratin! I do always take my own shampoo & conditioner to the person who does my cut & colour as I know it doesn't destroy the keratin and just don't trust anything else! I've also learned to take my own products with me whenever go on holiday or any occasion when I might wash my hair. It's just not worth the risk.
Do you swim much? Chlorine is the one thing I struggle with. I hate swimming so it's not much of an issue for me! This year, I had one treatment in Jan and then arranged my others around the holidays we went on in April and August as I knew I'd be swimming then so did it as soon as we got back. There must be ways of managing chlorine and keratin as a friend who has it swims a lot.

RoundandSad · 30/12/2024 21:22

@thehousewiththesagegreensofa no, I hardly swim, only on holiday

I colour my own hair. That's interesting I can do it after, it's not due for a couple of weeks so I'll see if the hairdressers have time to chat about it and maybe do it before.

dreading sitting in the chair for hours but I suppose it's the way it is. Also last time. I was in a salon, someone was having it done and the fumes were quite bad. It must've changed though. I've been going to a lady who has now retired and I mostly went to her house so I haven't been in the salon for awhile to know if the fume thing has improved.
