Help, dry scalp

I've just realised I have a dry scalp. Pretty sure it's not dandruff when I research. I also get a sore scalp in places.

What can I use to fix it?

My hair is thin and I normally avoid weighing it down with products.

Rosemary oil is meant to be good

Firstly avoid harsh shampoos and especially anti-dandruff ones ( my scalp reacted very badly to Body Shop Ginger shampoo.

I recently tried the Cornish Seaweed company shampoo and conditioner - loved it. It is good for thinning hair apparently
It’s a bit pricey ( it was a gift). I would generally use a sulphate free moisturising type.

Rosemary oil is good for me if massaged into the scalp. Massage in general helps.

Don’t wash too often; let your hair air dry if you can

I tend to wash only 2-3 times and always air dry. So that's good to hear.

When do you apply the oil please? Does it not make your hair greasy?

This is excellent for the scalp.

Moogoo. Never fails.

I put the oil , mixed with almond oil on my scalp the night before a wash. Not a lot. About 5 drops Rosemary mixed with a good teaspoon of almond. ( I have extremely thick hair so start with less)

I have also mixed it with water and sprayed it on between washes - but I don’t think that’s as good.

You can mix it with your shampoo too.

I had this until I bought a water filter head for shower that got rid of chemicals in the water. I was desperate by the time I bought it and didn’t expect it to work, but it really really did, and quickly. It was a clip in filter, from Amazon.

Only thing that's ever helped me is Philip Kingsley Flaky Itchy scalp shampoo

RosesAndHellebores · 24/12/2024 22:40

I had this for years. The head and shoulders shampoo, conditioner and balm in the green packaging kept it under control.

Then I gave up wheat! Bingo! Every bit of dry skin and eczema cleared up, along with achy joints.

Interesting, as I have strawberry arms and legs too.

I buy this for my DS , he has quite a flakey scalp but if he uses anything like a bog standard dandruff shampoo it gets on his face and irritates his face skin.

PK is ££ but worth it for him, Smells lovely like apples .

My hairdresser advised me to wash my hair less often, but to shampoo twice when I do. It's made a big difference.

Also use upcircle shampoo which is good.

I found the ameliorate range really good for this - nothing else worked and I tried a lot! Also if letting my hair air dry, I always dry the roots and scalp at least. I have v thick hair and leaving my scalp damp for hours gives me flaky skin

I sometimes get a dry scalp in winter and this shampoo is excellent.

I had this for years and then made a few changes which cleared it up nearly completely. Stop leaving your hair to air dry, this actually encourages bacteria to grow in the damp areas which can inflame it further, but when you do blow dry do it on a low heat. Use Aveeno skin relief shampoo and buy a scalp oil (e.g. body shop ginger). Put the scalp oil on any flaky bits the night before and then wash the next day/ a couple of hours later.
