Help ! Red wine on a silk blouse

12 replies

WishIwas40 · 23/12/2024 08:18

A friend unwittingly spilt a whole glass of red wine down my back last night, the cream 100% silk blouse I was wearing has been soaking in a bottle of white wine but no sign of the stain lifting 😢 does anyone have any advice on what else I can try ?

First use salt- leave it for a while then brush off. Next soak in woolite and water for a couple of hours (I know it sounds odd but that stuff literally lifts any stain) then wash in a silk cycle.

If the stain doesn’t lift then perhaps you could have the blouse professionally dyed?

I use a very long, up to seven days, soak in cold water. I make up a mix of Oxiclean added to warm water that helps dissolve the granules. I allow that to cool before add to cold water before adding the wine stained item.
If you use anything warm you increase the risk of setting the stain.
Always keep a red wine stained item damp till you can cold soak.
White wine can help with some fabrics but silk as a natural fibre likes to absorb any stain deep into the fibre.

Once a wine stain has dried into silk there is nothing I have tried that has helped except getting creative and hand embroidering over it. (Written as one who gets handed wrecked church linens and vestments)

Ace bleach (in the blue bottle) might do the trick. It's gentle enough to use on silk.

Sorry to be a killjoy just before Christmas. I really don’t think anything will work 100% on silk. I hope you prove me wrong. You could try soaking in Vanish and then a delicates wash, switching the machine off for a couple of hours mid cycle for an extra soak.

Silk dyes are available, but any stitching in the blouse is unlikely to dye well and could be lighter. It could get to the point where you are spending more trying to save it, throwing good money after bad. Sorry OP!

Thank you all for your suggestions, I have woolite so going to try the salt and soak first 🤞🏻

@WishIwas40

How did you get on with your blouse?

CIaudiasFringe · 03/01/2025 23:36

The only solution for red wine or dark fruit juice is to run under a boiling or very hot tap as soon as you can. It melts the stain away
