Theatre and cocktails attire for a dumpy middle-aged dog-walker type.

I’m going to London for my best friend’s big birthday in January. It’s going to involve theatre and cocktails. I’ve no idea what to wear. I’m 55 years old and put on loads of weight in the last year so im now size 14/16 and 5’5 tall. Large boobs. Actually quite dumpy really. I like natural fibres and jewel colours. Don’t want to break the bank but don’t want to let my glamorous friend down either. Any ideas???

Whistles jumper dress Maybe a bit too fitted?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 22/12/2024 08:54

Or a subtle sparkly jumper to wear with the satin skirt?

Photo!

That’s about as far from ‘cocktail attire’ as is possible!

I suspect you want something a bit more exciting than cords and a puffer jacket, @EndofDaze!

(@DaisyChain505 you may not have noticed this is the Style & Beauty board - where people come in order to discuss new ways of looking their best. Adults don’t need to be told by the younger generation that they’re allowed to be comfortable in their clothes.)

It’s a shame you don’t think you own anything to base a cocktail sipping outfit on, @EndofDaze, (no velvet jacket; no silk shirt?) but I agree there’s no need to overdress. Something like this photo from Plümo - heavy linen dress, velvet Mary Jane shoes, carefully chosen accessories, would be understated but not everyday. Coat rather than jumper, perhaps! (You may need to tap the photo for the full picture.)

That dress is sold out but for strong colours and flattering, grown up shapes (and current or imminent sales) I’d look at:

Gather and See
Klements
Justine Tabak
Plümo
Rejina Pyo

I like that dress!

It’s always interesting when someone posts several suggestions and posters respond to only one of them. Grin

I’m hoping the OP has had the time / inclination to glance at the seven websites I’ve mentioned above - one or two of which might appeal to someone with FatFace everyday wear, who wants something a bit elevated in strong colours and natural fabrics.

Thanks for all your input. I’ve ordered a velvet jacket from M&S which will integrate into my existing wardrobe. I like the look of some leopard print trousers in Boden but alas sold out in my size so I think I’ll stick with my satin skirt and long black boots. That is all black so will need some colour for my top! Keep the suggestions coming as I’m not fixed on anything except that jacket!!

It would be helpful if you say if you like/hate any of the things people have posted.

Cocktails in London - black is a good call OP! I'm guessing a lot of people in the bar will coming from work, so there will be lots of dark suits and a black jacket and skirt will be perfect and boots are practical and warm in January. I'd maybe go for a plain satin blouse in emerald green? Something like this: https://www.seasaltcornwall.com/papaver-satin-shirt

Papaver Satin Shirt

An elegant satin shirt in a lightweight blend, with a relaxed fit and classic shirt details.

The tartan dress was not to my taste. The green dress was too short for me. I think I like quite classic cuts. If I’m browsing I would look at M&S, Cos, Boden (though not bought anything there for ages), some Seasalt. But none of that really delivers for this. I’ve decided dresses just make me look “matronly”. I’ve lost my waist and gained weight around my tummy.
