No Fast Fashion/High Street 2025?

I want to be a bit more environmentally conscious with clothes.

I have a habit of impulse purchase/panic buying things I don't really need especially online.

In 2025 I'm going to try and buy only:

Clothes & shoes made in the UK
and/or
Secondhand

I'm going to exclude underwear and sports kit from this list just to make it a bit more achievable.

Anyone else got any similar aims for next year?

Love this! I want to plan my purchases more, so only buy what I really really need. Like you I end up impulse buying or doing next day click and collect from Next for items I only wear a handful of times. I rather spend more for quality items but buy less!

I found an expensive jacket I've wanted for a while on Ebay. The manufacturer was having a Xmas sale which prompted me to look - i can't really afford it even in the sale so i feel like the preloved one came along at exactly the right time. It's made in Britain as well so that's both boxes ticked 😂

I find searching for things you want second hand takes so much time to get the right thing unless you're really lucky.

I try and stick broadly to that although I don't insist on UK made, it's just a bonus if it is. However I have to say, I find buying mostly second hand is incompatible with shopping thoughtfully

How do you mean @Floisme ? Is it just the availability of anything you want?

I'm talking mainly about buying second hand from real shops - charity shops, dress agencies, vintage shops. When I see something I'm always aware that a) it's probably a one-off and b) that it won't be there for long so, although I keep a mental list of what I'm looking for, I have a tendency to forget all about any such plans when I come across something I really like. So I often buy on impulse and sometimes it turns out to be a mistake. There aren't normally large sums of money involved but, over a year, it adds up.

If you shopping online for second hand then I imagine it's easier to avoid that kind of pressure and mistake because you can set up search lists etc. But then you've got the problem of buying something unseen and untried and I've seen enough posters talking about how addictive Vinted can be to feel it's not for me.

I hope that doesn't kill the thread by the way - I buy mostly second hand and I'm a fan! It's just that I don't believe it's a magic solution and also I don't think we (general 'we' not posters on this thread) talk about the pitfalls often enough.

lindyloo57 · 18/12/2024 16:12

Last year I joined the less buy, buy better thread, I did do quite well, stopped buying from cheap shops, like H&M, Newlook, primark, well I did buy one lace dress from there, what I mostly brought was reduced or on sale, I think only 4 items full price, unfortunately I have spent a little more this year than last, so must do better next year.

Yes I went through a phase of going a bit crazy on Vinted & buying stuff just because it was cheap so I know what you mean. Most of it wasn't exactly what I wanted either so it just ended up going to charity.
