He has thick waves/ curls that he likes. He wants something to make them hold but not too heavy that he can use in the morning.

I've bought some sea salt spray we can try

His dad uses clay but ds has it a bit longer and I think it will get greasy and heavy. Washes about x2 a week at the mo. (12)

Rather than using a product, as he tried using a curl conditioner to define the curl?

Umberto Giannini Curl Jelly on wash days, some John Frieda frizz curl styling spray to perk up in the mornings.

It's still an effort to get him to wash it so no.

Grin

To be honest, with minimal washing it often looks like it's full of product. There's just the occasional day when he wants to add something

Curly hair can get away with not being washed that often. It's actually better as it's naturally drier and regular washing strips it of it's oils and can dry it out more. Try a curl spray to dampen the curls then apply a curl gel. Once the gel is dry he should be able to scrub out the crunch and be left with defined curls.
