Hello Mumsnetters
I have quite a lot of good quality clothes and shoes that i don't wear anymore.
I have done a bit of selling on Vinted before but since my daughter came along I haven't had the energy. So the clothes etc just sit in a wardrobe making me feel more and more guilty.
Should I just go ahead and give them to charity instead ? I am getting to the stage the guilt at not selling them is feeling oppressive.

Why are you feeling guilty over your belongings?

WashableVelvet · 13/12/2024 23:19

Giving them to a charity shop is a good thing to do. Even better than vinted. Less hassle for you and benefits the cause you give them to.

Stop procrastinating. Tomorrow, get a big bin bag, put in anything you don't wear and take it immediately to your local charity shop / supermarket clothes recycling bin. Job done.

Why do you feel the need to sell them? Donate them to charity instead.

hi Precipice -
I think it is guilt at overconsumption and having more things than I need that I paid money for and didn't use enough.
I am not rich but we don't have any urgent money worries but I worry about something going wrong like losing my job (my anxiety talking). And therefore if I don't at least make some of that money back I have missed an opportunity to correct my original
mistake in buying the things in the first place.

another calmer part of my brain is thinking but a charity i like and support could gain if i just donated and that's valuable too.

Thanks for asking the question as actually I hadn't thought about it before and now i see the root of it has to do with anxiety which i hadn't thought about before

If I need to clear space in my wardrove, I either give to charity or offer things to family and friends.
Not worth my time and energy to try selling clothes 2nd hand, and I no longer have a time consuming baby.

The podcast ‘Overcome Compulsive Hoarding, with That Hoarder’ is really interesting for uncovering the links between anxiety and consumerism and all sorts of other things, and how we allow ourselves to get rid of things, or don’t.

Well worth a listen- there’s a huge back catalogue looking at this whole area from different aspects.
