Box dye over salon bleached hair

So I've just wasted about £500 in the space of 3 months plus nearly two days in salons (literally the only times I've arranged that much childcare in about 8 years) trying to do something different with my hair before my 40th. The first time what they did was too subtle and this time they've turned my hair scarecrow straw yellow.

Since my hair is bleached and toned, is it okay to use a box dye to go a bit darker? I'm a bit confused about what I've read online about the damage this might do - I'm not sure if those threads apply to people who've just bleached their hair or people who have bleached and toned their hair... Does anyone have any experience of using box dye with bleached and toned hair?

Thanks!

Go back to the salon and ask them to fix it. How much darker do you want to go. If it's still blond and has bleach in it it is a very bad idea. Even if it doesn't i think it will be patchy at best.

Personally i wouldn't use anything stronger than a toner on your hair at this stage.
I've done things like this over the years and it never ever looks like the colour on the box.

You need to be very careful putting dye over bleached hair. If you use a dye with the wrong undertones it can go muddy green, plus your hair is more porous and it will fade much quicker because of the bleach. I would get a good toner, like redken shades, and use that instead. It's surprising the difference a proper toner can do.

You need a toner to get rid of the yellow, don't use a dye kit. Wella toner 10/81 is more of a white toner - I always use this one, and wella toner 10/69 is more of a silver toner. Mix 50/50 with 6% peroxide, no higher.

Good luck, it's quite shocking how many hairdressers are happy to send clients away with yellow hair.
