At home gel nails - safe if HEMA free?

Hi, I've read various things recently about the risks of do it yourself gel nails. I've had a mylee LED lamp for something like 7 years now and do my own fingernails and sometimes toenails pretty much every two weeks. I've built up quite a polish collection.

Since covid / having kids and extra handwashing etc my skin is already pretty sensitive, so reading articles about the increased contact dermatitis / allergy risk does make me want to avoid acrylates etc, but i LOVE having brightly coloured nails and im pretty sure if i went gel free for any length of time my nails would be pretty damn weak 😬

So I'm trying to work out what I should do going forward... for example, if I buy a new lamp (ie it definitely cures properly!) and only use HEMA free gel polishes that are within a couple of years old (bluesky advertises as this and is mostly what i have anyway!), would this be considered low risk? Or am I better off scrapping the idea of gel and looking at some of the acrylate-free regular polishes (looks like Nails Inc do a plant range)? Or alternating? Or something else? Appreciate any advice!

I don't have the same worries as you but I'm getting the GlamRDip set for Christmas to try. This is after using a Sensationail lamp for years and various gel varnishes (mainly Sensationail and Bluesky). I fancy trying the powder technique.

Check out The Salon Life on YouTube. She has loads of information on this sort of thing. But basically, HEMA isn’t the only thing you can become allergic to. Normal nail polishes are generally better but can still cause surface damage.

As for the plant/natural/breathable claims…they’re all just a marketing ploy.
