Dying things black

How successful is this?

I have some light blue chino type trousers (cotton), which I wish were black. Could I dye them? Does it actually work? Any tips for me?

TIA x

I regularly redye my black jeans with the Dylon stuff. It works really well.

Thank you - that's very helpful!

Have you also ever dyed anything black which wasn't black to start with? Wondering how possible it is to get something originally pale properly black....

Thanks again.

I’ve read that you can do it in stages so dye it navy first and then black but I’ve never done it myself. Worth a try though, the dye is only £8 or something.

Yes it works. 2 boxes might be advisable. The potential issue is the stitching - the thread may not be cotton and therefore not dye.

ImNotThereAmI · 09/12/2024 10:47

It will def dye black, but as pp said, the stitching is unlikely to change colour

WorriedRelative · 09/12/2024 10:57

It is generally best to dye things reasonably close to the original colour as stitching, zips, buttons, etc don't change. Also the results can be a bit unpredictable depending upon the fabric and the original colour.

I would only try light blue to black if it was something that was otherwise unusable or if I was happy to ruin it.

As I teenage goth many many years ago I tried to dye several things black and never really succeeded though I did totally piss my mum off by dyeing the washing machine and some buckets.

Either it's not black enough, or it's uneven and as someone else says the thread often doesn't take the dye.

SoupDragon · 09/12/2024 11:27

I think it would fail because of the stitching and zip not taking the dye.

SquidGaming · 09/12/2024 11:48

Thank you very much, all. That's a pain about the stitching, isn't it?

I might try anyway, because I never use them in this colour (always scared I'll sit in something).

Thanks again!

Why not try a darker blue?

That's a good idea! Thank you
