Moustache help - female....

Late 40s, never done anything to my top lip but noticed an increase in hair at the edges, and it's darker too.

I don't "do" beauty stuff. Hair cut about twice a year. Very occasional eyebrow threading.

The eyebrow lady has offered to do my lip , but Jesus the eyebrows are agony, and also I don't go consistently.

What's the best "at home" option for a novice?

Tweezzerman facial hair remover. Stings a bit but you get used to it

StarDolphins · 07/12/2024 21:32

I just leave mine. I have enough to do without this. I have the most horrible hair on my head though, the sort that Brillo would pay a fortune for, so I don’t think anyone notices my moustache.

mikado1 · 07/12/2024 21:33

Laser, 4 sessions sorted me. I was told that waxing or threading encorage growth and it's just a temporary measure. In the meantime, trimming with a good nail scissors is surprisingly effective.

SaagAloopa · 07/12/2024 21:35

Dermaplaning

Dolphinnoises · 07/12/2024 21:36

Braun facial epilator - I so recommend it. I always got the area threaded until I got one - works like a charm and pain very tolerable

helpmyback · 07/12/2024 21:41

I'd book 6 laser session and be done with it for ever.

Falling or buy a Lumea and do other bits too

Or a tinkle razor

Any other method leaves me with a red moustache of pain! I had it waxed once and it was agony!

helpmyback · 07/12/2024 21:41

I say for ever but you may get further hormonal growth- this is not the hair returning.

marriednotdead · 07/12/2024 22:17

Facial wax strips are cheap and easy.

madaboutpurple · 07/12/2024 22:56

I find having threading/waxing is very useful.

PressedOnion · 07/12/2024 23:12

Whatever you do, don't let the threading lady near your lip. I had one 'upsell' while she was doing my eyebrows, and on the basis that my lip must have been horrific if she suggested it needed doing, i said yes. Dear God, the pain. My eyes didn't stop watering for about two hours, and I still had a moustache, just made of angry red skin instead of hair. Now I just trim the lip hair close to the skin with nail scissors.

Bodgey · 07/12/2024 23:14

Laser , and little face razors inbetween.
laser is cheaper than you imagine now, but is more effective if you have pale skin and dark hair.

SnapdragonToadflax · 07/12/2024 23:30

I have Mediterranean colouring and have had a bit of a tache since I was a child, so have much experience of dealing with it.

I use a Phillips Lumea when I can be bothered, but mostly just do a quick shave every few days. So much easier and quicker than all the other options. I get it threaded once a month when I get my eyebrows done, and I love that because it lasts longer than shaving. My eyebrows are much more painful (very thick, dark hair).

Using the Lumea massively reduces the amount and thickness of my hair, I just can't be bothered to do it as regularly as I should.

I tried electrolysis years ago but it was so painful and I didn't see any reduction in hair growing back. Bleaching looks terrible in sunlight. Waxing doesn't suit my sensitive skin, I get spots and burns. The Tweezerman spiral thingy is agony.

Drivingoverlemons · 08/12/2024 00:20

I have mine waxed about every five weeks along with eyebrow/lash dye and shaping.

Allnewtometoo · 08/12/2024 01:02

Thanks all. I can't afford a lumea, and imagine laser is out of the question too. I really don't fancy the threading . I know people who wax, bit they have an oddly bald area in amongst the usual downy face hair.so always looks imo! Maybe I'll just cultivate it

Just bleach it.. cheap and makes it less noticeable

TiramisuThief · 08/12/2024 01:52

I just get my whole face waxed once a month, the lip along with it.

Threading gives a far better finish imo but it hurts more.

I tried the springy stick thing, awful. Don't do that.

Facial wax strips are cheap and easy.

But they burn my skin. Now I just get a top lip wax at the local salon once every six weeks or so.

Swearwolf · 08/12/2024 06:55

I use facial Nair, it's a cream so doesn't hurt at all. The only thing you have to be careful of is leaving it on too long but I've only done that once.

DjCatnip · 08/12/2024 07:03

...just shave? It's good enough for men.

If you do try threading if you take painkillers 60bmins before hand that can help

Allnewtometoo · 08/12/2024 17:48

Good grief I don't want to shave and have stubble.

I didn't think of Nair, that might be a good start. Easy.

Yes you have to be very cautious about using these. I used them for years without a problem then one day I used one and it was extra sticky, pulled off a layer of skin and left a permanent scar.
