Work bag and clothes

I’ve just been offered a new job and I need a completely new work wardrobe and bag.

It’s a pretty conservative company and moderately formal (I don’t need full suits but I will need shirts and trousers/skirts or work dresses).

I haven’t worked in a corporate environment for about 6 years (and I’ve had 2 kids in the meantime). I’m totally lost about what to buy or where to find it.

None of my old clothes fit and my style has changed (although I’m not really sure what to!)

I’d love any suggestions.

  • I’m mid 30s and 5’7. Size 8-10.
  • I’m still breastfeeding/pumping so any very fitted shirts look obscene! I prefer floatier silk shirts anyway (I borrowed a friend’s Sezane shirt for my interview and loved it- but worry about the upkeep of silk shirts, especially because I’ll have to take a baby and toddler to nursery on my way in).
  • Because of the clients I’ll be working with I need modest/conservative clothes (nothing too tight and at least knee/elbow length).
  • I prefer neutral-ish colours and patterns. Although I do like subtle details and colours (dusky pink, blush, blue etc)
  • It’s a big salary jump so I have a decent budget. Probably £350ish per outfit (although I’m flexible for the right thing).

I’d also really like to get a nice work bag that goes with anything. My budget is probably up to £800ish (so nice but not high end designer). I don’t need it urgently so could buy in the sales after Christmas if there’s something slightly over budget.
Any suggestions for designers or places to look. I’ve seen a few in the Aspinal and Strathberry sale that I quite like but I’m very open to other ideas. I like:

  • Simple and classic designs
  • Neutral colours
  • Shoulder strap
  • Big enough for a laptop and A4 notebook (although this isn’t a deal breaker for the right bag)
  • Hardwearing (no cream canvas!)

Thank you!

Have you tried Mia Tui for work bags? They have a wide range from hand bags, tote bags, laptop bags? Around £50 to £100 per bag. I have had a coupe and they have lasted for years.

I’ve got quite a few nice blouses from Me+Em in silk/cotton which are easy maintenance wise. I think they’re £175 usually and are not bulky under a sweater or cashmere tank. I like wide leg trousers and nice knitwear, recently bought some nice tops from Brora and Veronica Beard. I’m boring in the work bag department, I have a couple of Bayswater totes and a Cambridge satchel company laptop bag. I have a smaller strathberry bag which is lovely

Might be worth having a look at the Whistles jackets. They're about £100 and come in a variety of colours. I also like Kettlewells cowl Jersey interlock tops underneath. I prefer them to button through blouses. Team with good quality trousers.

Regarding the bag, I prefer a sturdy laptop/work bag for about £100 and a good but much smaller cross body fir easy access to essentials when travelling. Keys, pass, small wallet, tickets, phone, etc. In my opinion an expensive bag from Strathberry/Aspinal/Smythson, etc is as likely to get marked as a cheaper one.

LK bennett is my go to for work dresses, neutral colours, not too tight or revealing and currently have a good sale (I always wait for their sales). Jaeger have good work trousers and shirts, also like Me & Em.

@user1469095927 thank you, I’ve had a look and the bags are nice. I think I’m looking for something a bit more structured for work but the travel bags look ideal for work travel (when I don’t need to take all the luggage I need with kids!)

@PinkTonic Me and Em is such a good idea, I’d totally forgotten to check there. I think a cotton/silk mix is probably a good compromise. I love the Liberty print silk shirts on Brora so I might treat myself to a couple of those to wear with my really boring grey trousers. I’d not heard of Veronica Beard before but it’s really nice (I like the Sabrina silk cami for under jackets).

@RosesAndHellebores Whistles is a good suggestion, some of my favourite clothes are from there but I haven’t bought anything from them for ages and totally forgot to check.
I know buying a cheaper bag is probably just as good, I just can’t find anything I love. Do you have any suggestions for brands. I think I probably just don’t know where to look because I haven’t found much in the £100-300 bracket (I’ve had cheaper, high street bags for the past few years and would really like something a bit more special now it’s not just a tote for sticker books and teething snacks!)
