Long-lasting, easy to care for, machine washable jumpers?

I have some lovely cashmere knits but want some easy to wear jumpers that I can wear around the house (as well as out) that can be machine washed. Bit of a faff washing wool and cashmere. What materials to look for?

I’ve got a few lovely Uniqlo merino wool crew neck jumpers, my winter uniform I call them! On their third winter, go in the machine and dry quickly, don’t need ironing. My only complaint is I wish they did more vibrant colours.

Woolovers ,
Pros-loads of choices and colours . Easy to wear and wash , good customer service .
Cons- it's very safe ( I have zero issues with that)
Stay in touch very regularly! Lots of emails & a physical catalogue ( you can change your preference on these)

Don't do m&s they bobble on the first wear

LigamentBandy · 06/12/2024 23:57

@Monty27 agree they are disappointing quality

Unless you are in a poorly heated house somewhere cold, thick cotton jumpers can look great and hold up to washing. I have a 100% cotton gap cable knit in cream which I've worn for about 8 years now. The only white jumper I'll wear because I can machine wash it!

The only other obvious alternative is fleece, which is having a bit of a fashion moment.

I would stay away from acrylic etc as they really don't wear well.

I second woolovers - they do a cashmere and merino mix that are brilliant- not as thin as some merino (looking at you M&S). They go in the washing machine and have stayed looking good for a couple of years and still going strong.

Chocolately · 07/12/2024 07:58

I find the men's merino jumpers from M&S much better quality than the women's. Also, longer. Pity the colours are limited, though.

SparkyBlue · 07/12/2024 08:06

Just spotted a few lovely ones on woolovers. What's the sizing like? I'm a 10-12 and usually a s in M&S tops.

WorriedRelative · 07/12/2024 08:21

100% cotton jumpers wash well. I have a few that are easy to bung in the wash and don't bobble.

Merino or wool is more hard-wearing than cashmere but still a bit of a faff. Blends of natural fibres can be good. Silk is surprisingly easy to deal with too I have a Silk/merino jumper that is years old and is machine washed.

Avoid acrylic like the plague. It bobbles if you look at it the wrong way.

The key is checking labels. You can get fantastic jumpers being sold alongside absolute crap. M&S for example have some good knitwear but you have to search for it amongst heaps of supersoft shit.

If you can look out for British wool. A proper Guernsey or Arran is worth every penny and will last decades.

Woolovers is good for classics and basics.

I’m a 12 and my medium woolovers cable merino one is a bit too big

LigamentBandy · 07/12/2024 19:58

I received a woolovers catalogue today this is the discount at the moment if you do choose anything
It's not 'my' discount & I don't benefit from anyone else's spending so no ulterior motives for sharing

Was just looking at these! Do you tumble dry them?

StillSmallVoice · 11/12/2024 14:11

Merino are great. Uniqlo or M&S are my default brands. I now have a merino from Cos which I'm really liking and is washing well. I'm a bit off Woolovers since they started putting a bit of cashmere in the jumpers and upped the price.

FrancoiseTruffaut · 11/12/2024 14:13

I like the merino jumpers from COS

Ooh, good to know. Do you wash your Uniqlo and Cos merino wool jumpers in a washing machine, or do you hand wash? Have they held up well?

YYURYYUCICYYUR4ME · 11/12/2024 14:59

I have a hand wash programme, for woollens, on my LG and the cashmere from M&S, Uniqlo, various older makes, goes on that programme, with the woolite liquid detergent. They are double spun - run through spin cycle twice - and air dried. Definitely never in the tumble dryer.

No, they are quite lightweight so dry very quick ing on an airer

StillSmallVoice · 11/12/2024 16:37

@buzzheath I wash them in the machine on a wool cycle and dry them on an airer, and they are fine.
