I didn't want to crash in on the thread that's already going as I have very different hair.

What is going on with hairdressers who don't seem to understand things that I thought were well known? So I used to have a hairdresser who has retired now. She just did a long layer, cut square. It was very good. height at crown, nice shape

I have found that other hairdressers don't know what this means. Unfortunately, I had tried growing out the layer in summer so I can't show them and I don't take photos of the back of my head.

I tried showing two hairdressers on YouTube and they looked quite confused. Then they showed me pictures they have in their salon but if they aren't going to cut it the same way then the risk of having round layers or pointy layers is too high.

I did look to see if there is new terminology that I might not know, but I can't find any and as I say, YouTube is full of this square layer. So why does no one understand it?

Thanks for any thoughts. I'm probably more pissed off because the salon I asked today talked to me like I was an idiot. The others were polite at least.

I don't know what a square layer is either
Can you link to what you mean?

I’ve never heard of a square layer.

RoundandSad · 06/12/2024 22:03

@Christmaseason @dementedpixie are you hairdressers, is there maybe a newer term I should use?

thetes so many videos on YouTube. I thought the term was still being used

Square layers Vs round layers is pretty basic stuff. I'm about as far from a hairdresser as you can get and even I know what that means.
Google shows you a billion videos and posts about it.

Square layers are very outdated, and there's better techniques and layering to get the look you want. Don't be put off because a stylist doesn't want to do a square layer.

Square layers are often misused on the wrong hair type and create an unholy weight line.

Sometimes, the client doesn't always know what's best. Just because you think you understand a certain cutting technique doesn't mean you actually do.

Seems like OP wanted to know a better way of explaining it then?

Okay thanks was that recent? I don't have one near but will see where there is one.

I don't pretend to understand how it all works but one poster mentioned a "heavy weight line". That is what my hair needs. It sits really well with that cut. Other cuts it needs lots of styling and then falls out of place right away. That cut was so easy and I just dried it and was ready to go.

there's been odd time my old hairdresser couldn't fit me in but when I went elsewhere I regretted it because round layers, pointy layers, texturising when I specifically say not to - I booked my old hairdresser weeks in advance in the end, she was fab. Can't believe she retired. Well of course we all will 😂 but sad for her clients

as recent as 2010 but an older stylist there will be able to do one and just point out you don’t want it to be thinned out! it’s a very basic cut to be honest any hairdresser should be able to achieve that and i’m shocked that you have had trouble achieving it with other hairdressers! one of the first ones your taught but i guess some just go a little crazy thinning out at the end removing the weight!
