Simple skincare advice please

I am nearly 42 and have never had a skincare routine. I generally wash my face with shower gel and that’s about it. I put suncream on if it’s sunny but feel I should be making more of an effort but need something very easy or I am likely to give it up! I don’t wear any makeup and my skin isn’t too bad considering I don’t really do anything with it. Forehead, nose and chin get a little greasy and occasionally get a few spots.

ideally I would like some recommendations please on a face wash I can use in the shower in the morning and I presume I should moisturise? What about at night? Same routine? I would like to keep it as simple as possible please (ideally items I can buy from Superdrug)

thank you so much to anyone who can help!

I haven't got the inclination for any skincare routine, however in my late thirties my skin got dry but also greasy?! and needed something. I keep it VERY simple and I'm sure it will horrify some people 😜
.
I clean morning and night with micellar water and cotton pads. Then use a tiny bit of Aveeno baby cream/lotion (I think it's just general purposes not for face) after this. And sudocrem on any spots. If I'm showering I'll wash it with basic bar soap.

In the sun I use facial SPF 50+.

And that's it!

The main change was the Aveeno baby stuff and it has improved my skin. I use as little as I can get away with though because I hate stuff on my skin.

I go through phases with skincare- either "on it" and have daily/weekly routines, or just about manage to take my make up off.

I saw a TikTok about a brand called FaceFacts going on about how great it was and it is/was available in Savers. I actually spotted some in my local "not pound shop"- cheap but not everything is a pound! Anyway it's suiting my current lazy phase as it's a bottle of cleanser with a pump- massage into face and rinse in the shower. And the moisturiser is rich but not greasy- suiting my face with the cold weather.

I think the trick with building a routine, as well as the tricky bit of finding what products suit your skin, is factoring them into an existing part of your day so cleansing in the shower, moisturise when you get dressed etc.

Superdrug's Naturally Radiant own brand stuff has been lovely for me in the past- maybe try their hot cloth cleanser in the shower and finish off with the day cream? They have some other bits too if you feel you need it- serums, eye creams etc. Just pick stuff you think you'll use and introduce slowly to figure out what's working/any reactions.

Start by stop washing your face in the shower! Take time for yourself .
You need to know what skin type you are so it could be soft going to a physical shop/ counter and have a real person help with advice. I believe superdrug have staff who can advise and some also have eyebrows bars. Lots of products feel nice but do very little. Protection from UV & pollution are always good for your skin

I think the Cerave products are very good. I use the smoothing cleanser in the shower in the morning, it has salicylic acid in and comes in a pump action bottle for ease.

I like to balm double cleanse with a flannel at night as I'm a make up wearer, I'll try any balm although I do object to paying silly money for them. I like M & S, No7, Neal's Yard or Superdrug. I would like to try the Caroline Hirons Skin Rocks new one but it's over £50!

For moisturiser I like Charlotte Tilbury magic cream for day as it's great under make up. At night I like bio oil on my face and body - I find oils easier on my body as they are quicker to use, creams take ages to rub in!

Lostsadandconfused · 03/12/2024 04:53

@LigamentBandy why should you not wash your face in the shower? I only ever wash my face in the shower. Not with shower gel obviously.

PullZook · 03/12/2024 07:02

First, you must clean your face with a facial cleanser, and then use a facial mask.

If you have sensitive skin, you need to be extra careful.

I almost had an allergic reaction.

LigamentBandy · 03/12/2024 09:18

@Lostsadandconfused feel free to Google, for a clearer answer but, heat/steam can strip the moisture from your skin, making it more dry.
If you wash/clean your face over the sink /looking in a mirror you concentrate more ( without realising) on the movements , so you're not dragging your skin ( qualified beauty therapist , worked in salons , worked in stores and used to rep for several skincare companies)
If you want to wash your face in the shower you do you, the op asked for advice, my advice was offered
Ps "soft" should have said "worth"'

Please don't use shower gel on your face :(
If you are on a budget then Simple brand is great. Cleanse and moisterise morning and night, you can use micellar water with cotton pads to cleanse or a gentle rinse off cleanser. At night if you need something heavier you can use a night cream rather than a plain moisteriser, Simple do an amazing one called water boost I think which feels really light but makes your skin really soft and smooth over night.

Thank you so much everyone for replying, I will look into the products. Never knew washing your face in the shower would be damaging and will stop with the shower gel 🤣
