Looking for skin care advice (face)

Afternoon everyone!

Skin care, make-up, hair - it's always been difficult for me to know what suits me or what products to use (I was the only teen in my friend group who never wore make-up as I didn't know what looked good, so I just didn't wear any for fear of looking silly etc).

I'm 35 now, 2 young children and look considerably different as I did 4 years ago! I'd love some tips for taking care of my skin, especially on my face (and my feet).
I have a few questions, likely very simple stuff but I really am clueless!

I've bought Eucerin oil spf50+ to start wearing on my face during the day. But what should I be doing at night? Is a cleanser used to clean the face/pours? Should I be using this? Can anyone please recommend a nighttime routine? Products that you use? Should I be cleaning off the Eucerin before bed at night? Should anything go underneath the Eucerin or should I do anything before I apply it?

Thanks in advance for any help!

Ive had my skin analysed by a brilliant lady at No 7. It was specifically for a new foundation but she made some skin care recommendations as well,I was buying a new moisturiser anyway so went with her suggestion,it’s made quite a difference. I booked an appointment with the brilliant Siobhan in Norwich & have booked a follow up for February, all free

UmberMoose · 01/12/2024 12:57

Here goes my routine which you may try:
Morning:
Using water to wash your face,
Sebamed clear face gel,
Garnier spf
Evening:
Micellar water
Cerave moisturizer,
Tretinoin (0.1) from skinorac
Sebamed clear facial gel

BlastedPimples · 01/12/2024 12:59

Cerave is a great brand.

rubyslippers · 01/12/2024 13:02

Morning - wash face with water
vit c serum
moisturiser - something light
SPF

evening - double cleanse with micellar water and then foaming cleanser or an oil and then water based cleanser
retinal - every other day
moisturiser

in winter I add an under eye cream and twice or three times a week I use a BHA exfoliator

dreamingofsun · 01/12/2024 13:03

second the no7 suggestion. the make-up is pretty cheap so doesnt feel so painful. plus they have offers on. i got the lot minus lipstick for 50 which seemed pretty good value to me. the lady gave me tips on applying it and i've watched a few utube videos

Cerave is a great brand.

I second for cerave

Deathraystare · 02/12/2024 13:40

Whether or not you use a cleanser in the morning or just water you absolutely must use a cleanser at night especially if waring make up and/or SPF..

Boots no 7 is a good call. I think their foundations are very good plus when I went for them to decide my shade of foundation, I already knew I was a warm Ivory and that is what came up! they also showed me a list of suitable lip colours too!

LilacLilyBird · 02/12/2024 14:47

Keep things simple as you're new to it all

Micellar water to cleanse in the morning of if showing then wash with Cerave SA

Apply a Boots No 7 serum followed by Boots No 7 moisturiser

Apply spf if you're out and about your Eucerin will be fine

Micellar water at night to clean face

Apply a boots No 7 serum followed by a Boots No 7 night cream

I use lots of skin care products so won't go into those.

The Boots No 7 range I like is the pink one called restore and renew

As for foundation after using high end for years I'm really happy with Boots Stay perfect because it suits my skin and the colour matches me perfectly

LilacLilyBird · 02/12/2024 14:49

Or if showering use Cerave SA (I use Dermalogica special cleanse because I have sensitive skiin. It's more expensive but very concentrated so lasts forever)

LilacLilyBird · 02/12/2024 14:57

Also I luckily have nicely shaped hooded eyes so can get away with no eyeshadow but l generally wear a mid brown on my lid and crease and mascara

I've been using my eyelash curlers daily since I was 14 and mascara (apply translucent face powder before applying mascara so it do have a chance to run)

Mascara and lipstick on its own is a great way to look a bit polished with minimal effort. I like a neutral lipstick so a sort it beige pink with yellow under tone which suits my skin colour

Use Nivea double effect on a cotton pad to remove / just hold the pad over the eye for a few seconds and swipe of gently no crazy rubbing

LilacLilyBird · 02/12/2024 15:02

Always always cleanse your face at night

Garnier micellar water with cotton pads till the pad is clean so only one or 2 if not wearing make up

If you're wearing full face make up I will use a cleansing balm (boots) followed by my Dermalogica special cleanser then I must then I apply serum and moisturiser or face oil or I apply AHA acid or tretinoin

However in your case just go with micellar water (I do this most nights tbh because I'm tired)

GettingStuffed · 02/12/2024 15:06

If you have dry skin Nivea is amazing, if not it's too greasy

BlastedPimples · 02/12/2024 15:49

Also almond oil at night once or twice a week.

Cotswoldmama · 02/12/2024 16:32

Spf everyday is a great start as is vitamin c sometimes you can get a combined serum, I use the garnier one. At night i have a prescription for skin+Me, I use it for finelines and wrinkles so it has Tretinoin in it (a type of retinol but way stronger than otc so a prescription is needed in UK) which can also help with spots. I only cleanse at night and I use superdrug B cleansing balm to remove make up and then boots cucumber scrub. People tell me I have good skin, which I mainly put down to the Tretinoin. You can get a prescription for it from skin+Me or dermatica. You can use my link below to get a month free just pay £3.50 p&p but generally it takes 3 months to see results.

Wallacewhite · 02/12/2024 19:53

SPF is a great start, you definitely need a cleanser to take it off at night though.

Cotswoldmama · 02/12/2024 20:18

I have found the customer service with skin+Me really good, they gradually increase the Tretinoin as it can cause irritation, one month I found the increase too much and messaged them, they sent me out another lower strength free of charge, you can also pause or push back delivery dates which I find useful as I usually dont use it every day anf find there's usually a few extra days in the monthly doser.

OTannenbaumOTannenbaum · 03/12/2024 07:59

Thanks so much for replies everyone, wasn't expecting so many :) I'm going to read through properly later when DS2 is napping but even from skimming I see I definitely need to invest in a cleanser for before bed!

Garnier Vitamin C Daily UV Brightening Fluid Sheer Glow, SPF50+, Prevents + Corrects Sun Damages + Evens Skin tone, Face & Neck, For all skin types, Cruelty-Free, Vegan, 40ml : Amazon.co.uk: Beauty

The above is the SPF 50 I use which also has two other benefits - it contains vitamin C plus has a slight tint. Obvs it depends on your colouring. If you are dark then this is pointless I guess but it suits my light tones.

Of course it is better to use SPF on its own and you are supposed to cover two fingers with it but this is a good way og also getting vitami c (and a tint!).

I have to be careful with vitamin C as my skin does not like some products with it in but is happy with this one. It does give a lovely glow but is subtle.

M water is a NO!

zebranotzeebra · 03/12/2024 08:39

No skincare expert here but I was in a very similar position to you a couple of years ago- had been using the same simple face wash since I was a teenager and nothing else! I now use mostly Byoma products - milky oil cleanser, brightening serum and moisturizer in the evening. Have been using a Q&A face wash in the morning but think I might try cerave after reading this thread. I tried skin+me before my wedding (not tret as I was breastfeeding) but I didn't really get on with it. Lots of people rave about it though.

UmberMoose · 03/12/2024 12:54

M water is a NO!

It's pretty respective, may I know why its a no for you?

Deathraystare · 03/12/2024 19:04

I find miscellar water drying but also if I do use it it is after I have already cleansed once as I find it not enough.

fivebyfivebuffy · 03/12/2024 19:08

I do

Am
Cleanse
Vitamin c
Moisturiser or SPF or both depending on season and what I'm doing

Pm
Makeup remover (micellar or eye makeup remover or oil)
Cleanser
Tret
Moisturiser
